Will Occupy Shut Down All West Coast Ports?
—By Gavin Aronsen
Sat Dec. 10, 2011 3:00 AM PST

Around nine o'clock on the night of November 2, after more than 10,000 people marched to the Port of Oakland in support of Occupy Oakland's call for a general strike, an independent arbitrator declared the port unsafe for its workers, effectively securing its closure for the rest of the night. This Monday, Occupy Oakland will try to best its 12-hour port shutdown with a more ambitious West Coast "port blockade" joined by more than a dozen occupations from Anchorage to San Diego.
westcoastportshutdown.org
Occupy Oakland's renewed call to shut down the "Wall Street on the waterfront" was sparked in large part by the October firing of 26 port truckers in Los Angeles and Long Beach who wore Teamster T-shirts to work in defiance of their anti-union employer, the Australian-owned Toll Group. Monday's protests are also being billed as a protest against port terminals run by the Goldman Sachs-owned Stevedoring Services of America (SSA) and a show of solidarity with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union's rank-and-file—particularly in Longview, Washington, where the union is engaged in a contract fight with Export Grain Terminal, a subsidiary of the agribusiness giant Bunge.

Outhouses and Injustices: Australia’s Toll Group Degrades America’s Truck Drivers
September 10, 2011
The ugly laws that relegated black Americans to second-class citizens for nearly a century in the post-slavery South were struck down over 45 years ago. Appallingly, that hasn’t stopped the Australian-based corporation that currently handles cargo for popular apparel and athletic brands Guess? and Under Armour from conducting business practices in Southern California that smack of Jim Crow.
Just as African-Americans were forced to use separate, inferior public restrooms and drinking fountains, Toll Group, a global transportation and logistics powerhouse, explicitly bars its truck drivers from using the clean and stocked indoor facilities; these roughly 75 men and women who haul imports for the fashion and footwear retail customers must share a trio of foul-smelling, unsanitary port-a-potties that lack running water outside in the company yard. Every Toll Group employee and manager is also free to use the break room during rest and meal periods, except the mostly Latino-American workers whose job it is to haul giant containers from port terminals to local warehouses.

Drivers employed by San Pedro-based Toll Group held a march Thursday, claiming they are underpaid, forced to use unsanitary restrooms and were intimidated by a "union-buster" hired by the trucking company. During the rally, workers were blocked from presenting their managers with a petition signed by more than 1,000 Harbor Area residents, urging Toll Group to provide better working conditions for the company's 75 drivers who are regularly dispatched to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. So far, 62 drivers have signed a petition stating that they want to unionize, said Xiomara Perez of Lakewood, who has worked nearly three years for Toll Group. "We are organizing for better work conditions because our restrooms are so dirty, there's no place to take a lunch or rest and we want to stop the intimidation," Perez said. "They tell us that if we don't like the company, then we should leave ... but I know my rights and I should be respected." Managers at Toll Group's office in San Pedro referred calls to the company's U.S. headquarters in Carteret, N.J. Executives at the company's New Jersey office declined to comment. - Art Marroquin

New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer: Kaplan Brokers Plead Guilty To Late Trading - AG, SEC Continue Coordination Of Mutual Fund Industry Probe
Date 11/01/2005
Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said today that two executives of a Florida-based investment company have pleaded guilty to state criminal charges in connection with the ongoing investigation of illegal trading practices in the mutual fund industry. In a related development, the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) announced a civil action against the pair.
According to the attorney general's criminal charges and the SEC findings, the two employees of Kaplan & Company Securities engaged in illegal late trading of mutual funds on behalf of Kaplan and specific hedge fund clients.

SAN DIEGO -- Police have arrested nine anti-Wall Street protesters in downtown San Diego, including one who scrambled up a tree. Occupy San Diego said in a statement Tuesday that the protesters were watching a DVD of Michael Moore's "Capitalism-A Love Story" when the officers raided their demonstration. Police spokeswoman Lt. Andra Brown says most of the nine arrested at 2 a.m. Monday violated illegal lodging laws that prevent them from setting up tents or sleeping in the city's Civic Center Plaza. One has been charged with obstructing an officer in the performance of his duties, and the man who climbed up the tree was charged with vandalism for breaking branches. Demonstrators say more than 100 people have been arrested since the protest began Oct. 14.

Alternate Routes to West Oakland BART
There will be busses and cars at West Oakland to transport those who can't walk and to transport people quickly. We can always use more cars and bikes so if you have one show up at West Oakland Bart and check in with people organizing transit.
Things to bring Monday:
Please bring lots of food and water. The logistics and kitchen teams have been hard at work but food and water may run out or not reach your area of the port. We want you to stand strong so bring a backpack with supplies for yourself and others. Print out some maps of the port http://www.portofoakland.com/pdf/mari_map.pdf and charge your phone.
Things to bring for others:
The committee tasked with supplies has a lot but can always use more. To lend bike trailers and portopotties and give food and water please bring them to the West Oakland BART in the morning. Also email events@occupyoakland.org, there will be a food/supplies depot set up near the port. Other things that are useful to the logistics team for the port shutdown: Bullhorns and batteries for them, drivers with cars and trucks, people with bikes, people who show up early to help get us set up.

More of Hawai'i Standing in Solidarity With West Coast Port Shutdown!

UPDATE: Occupy Maui, Occupy Honolulu, and Occupy Hilo are participating in direct action blockades of their ports tomorrow.  The local ILWU leadership has agreed that union members will not cross picket lines, and rank-and-file are on board.  This is an immense statement, as over 70% of Hawai'ian food and material resources are imported to the remote island-chain state, and underscores to the people's desire for a re-emergence of self-sustainable agriculture and goods production on the islands.
Occupy Hilo (Big Island of Hawaii) will be standing in solidarity with the West Coast Port Shutdown at Hilo Terminal from 12p-3p on Monday 12/12. Occupy Waimea and Occupy Kona will also be waving signs and standing in solidarity with the port shutdown on Monday.
This joins Occupy Maui's call for solidarity a few days ago!

Tokyo General Union Supports West Coast Port Shutdown

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Dan Coffman, President of Longview ILWU Local 21 (third from left) addresses 10,000 workers at Do-ro Chiba anti-capitalist labor rally in Tokyo on November 6. ZeTokyo General Union Executive President Louis Carlet (fourth from left) translates, accompanied by Tokyo General activists.
Tokyo General Union supports the upcoming West Coast Port Shutdown and the Occupy Movement.  We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters taking such a courageous step to end this economic system that brings untold riches to the 1% at the expense of the 99%.     We are the largest foreigner-led multinational union in Japan. We know that only through international unity and thoroughgoing democracy can we bring about real change in our world.
Let's not just reach across national borders.  Let's crush all borders and all matter of people or thing that dares divide workers and other citizens anywhere in the world. Let's not talk their talk. Let's change the perspective and parameters of the debate.  Let's muster the courage to question the tenets of our social contract, like the need for notions such as nation, corporations, and money.
Your movement occupies the streets, the parks, the ports and indeed our hearts.   We stand with you.
