CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez speculated on Wednesday that the United States might have developed a way to give Latin American leaders cancer, after Argentina's Cristina Fernandez joined the list of presidents diagnosed with the disease.

It was a typically controversial statement by Venezuela's socialist leader, who underwent surgery in June to remove a tumor from his pelvis. But he stressed that he was not making any accusations, just thinking aloud.

"It would not be strange if they had developed the technology to induce cancer and nobody knew about it until now ... I don't know. I'm just reflecting," he said in a televised speech to troops at a military base.

"But this is very, very, very strange ... it's a bit difficult to explain this, to reason it, including using the law of probabilities."

Chavez, Fernandez, Paraguay's Fernando Lugo, Brazil's Dilma Rousseff and former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have all been diagnosed recently with cancer. All of them are leftists.

The State Department on Thursday said Chavez's comments were "horrific and reprehensible." Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said they were not worthy of further response.

Chavez has long questioned whether the U.S. government could be plotting to oust him. But earlier this week he went far beyond that, saying it was very strange that he and the leaders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay have struggled with cancer.

Recent epidemiological evidence suggests that there is a relationship between the incidence of breast cancer and the presence of organochlorine insecticides in the body. There are many study results indicating that environmental factors have strong influence on the occurrence of breast cancer and that estrogenic actions of various chemicals are one of the most strongly suspected contributing factors. The overall objective of this project is to understand the cellular mechanisms by which organochlorine pesticides act to cause cancer-like transformation of human breast cancer cells under laboratory (in vitro) conditions.

The role of environmental organochlorines in breast cancer is the subject of continuing debate and research. Epidemiological studies have reported numerous environmental chemical contaminants to be present in normal and cancerous breast tissue, including organochlorine insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls. The proposed study will address the interaction between estrogen and insecticides in human breast cancer cells and normal cells. Specifically, we will study the role of growth factors and the process of transmitting the growth cues from outside of the cell to the cellular proteins (signal transduction) in the insecticide-induced foci formation (a biomarker for cancer promotion).

The West Australian Environment Protection Agency has evidence that Roundup has killed three species of frogs 3. At first, the reaction from the National Registration Authority was dismissive, but now a snap review of the effects of Roundup in or near aquatic environments is being undertaken. It is suspected by the WA EPA that it is the surfactant in Roundup that kills the frogs.
The manufacturers, Monsanto, have not released the names of the other ingredients in Roundup and they have not been tested in the environment in conjunction with the active ingredient, glyphosphate. Monsanto has reported "severe local effects and testicular effects in rabbits", so watch out!
Roundup is only conditionally registered with the Authority, because nineteen out of twenty eight studies have still not been done. These are studies to ascertain Roundup's movement and accumulation in water, soil, air, fish, irrigated crops, aquatic systems and forests.
In the state of New York, Roundup manufacturers Monsanto are no longer allowed to label their glyphosate products "biodegradable", or "environmentally friendly" in any advertising. (Monsanto is also the manufacturer of genetically-engineered, Roundup-resistant soybeans.)
