It took just two years for the folk-rock shimmer and Camelot optimism of Surrealistic Pillow -- Jefferson Airplane's exquisite 1967 score for America's Summer of Love -- to harden into the black temper of Volunteers, the band's requiem for an America under Nixon. It is hard, in an Eminem era, to appreciate the original shock of hearing the Airplane sing "Up against the wall, motherfucker" in "We Can Be Together." Thanks to the blow-dried legacy of the 1980s' Starship, the sound of the Airplane's golden vocal triad -- Marty Balin, Grace... Read More

Excerpt:
Surrealistic Pillow is the second album by American psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, released in February 1967.[1]
Original drummer Alexander 'Skip' Spence had left the band in mid-1966, replaced by a jazz drummer from Los Angeles, Spencer Dryden, a nephew of Charlie Chaplin. New lead vocalist Grace Slick, formerly of the Great Society, joined the band in 1966. Both Slick and Dryden debuted with the band on records with this album and its attendant singles, thus completing the best-known line-up of the group, which would remain stable until Dryden's departure in early 1970. It is also considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the 1960s counterculture movement.

"We didn't hear no cops say nothing about getting down, drop a gun, nothing like that," he said. "All we heard was gunshots fired. And after that, everybody just started running in the house because we didn't know what was going on. The guy that died, his cousin, she was telling everybody, 'Call 911.' "
Camacho and his sister, Nancy, who was also present during the incident, said they had no idea the police were the ones shooting. They also said Xiong didn't have a gun.
"First I hear that they said they got called out here because (of) someone brandishing a gun or something, which wasn't true," she said. "I know no one was going to have a gun here. Everyone knows that there's kids here in the house. There was no gun and they didn't find a gun as far as I know. If there really was a gun, where is it?"

Excerpts:
1) The Cleveland School massacre (also known as the Stockton schoolyard shooting) occurred on January 17, 1989, at Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, California, United States. The gunman, Patrick Purdy, who had a long criminal history, shot and killed five schoolchildren, and wounded 29 other schoolchildren and one teacher, before committing suicide. His victims were predominantly Southeast Asian refugees.

2) In the fall of 1987, he began attending welding classes at San Joaquin Delta College and complained about the high percentage of Southeast Asian students there. In October 1987, he left California and drifted between Oregon, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Connecticut, South Carolina, and Tennessee searching for work. In early 1988 he worked at Numeri Tech, a small machine shop located in Stockton, and from July to October as a boilermaker in Portland, Oregon, living in Sandy with his aunt. He also purchased the Chinese-made AK-47 derivative used in the shooting there on August 3.[14] He eventually returned to California where he rented a room at the El Rancho Motel in Stockton on December 26. After the shooting the room was found decorated with numerous toy soldiers.[2][4][8]

The Hmong in America:A Story of Tragedy and Hope

Thoughts by Jeff Lindsay of Appleton, Wisconsin

Excerpt:

About the Author

Jeff Lindsay is a resident of Appleton, Wisconsin, who has known and worked with Hmong people since 1994. Jeff has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Brigham Young University, has been an Assistant and Associate Professor at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology on the Georgia Tech Campus, where he taught graduate-level science and engineering courses and advised many graduate students. Jeff is a registered U.S. patent agent and the former Corporate Patent Strategist of Kimberly-Clark Corporation, and loves inventing, photography, writing and learning.
Though it does not deal with the Hmong people, immigration to a strange land is a key motif in Jeff's recently published book on innovation, entrepreneurship and strategy from John Wiley & Sons: Conquering Innovation Fatigue by Jeff Lindsay, Cheryl Perkins, and Mukund Karanjikar. See the related blog, InnovationFatigue.com. Preview the book at http://tinyurl.com/nofatigue. Also see what some significant leaders in business and innovation have to say about the book.

Excerpts:
1) France: 15,000 Australia: 2,000 French Guiana: 1,500 Canada and Argentina: 600
Within the United States, the Hmong population is centred in the Upper Midwest (Wisconsin, Minnesota) and California

2) In their opposition of the repatriation plans, Republicans also challenged the Clinton administration's position that the Laotian government was not systematically violating Hmong human rights. U.S. Representative Steve Gunderson (R-WI), for instance, told a Hmong gathering: "I do not enjoy standing up and saying to my government that you are not telling the truth, but if that is necessary to defend truth and justice, I will do that."[48] Republicans also called several Congressional hearings on alleged persecution of the Hmong in Laos in an apparent attempt to generate further support for their opposition to the Hmong's repatriation to Laos.

     b.  Disappearance

In September Vue Mai, a Hmong leader who in November 1992 had
returned voluntarily to Laos from a refugee camp in Thailand to
seek a settlement site for his family and adherents,
disappeared in Vientiane.  The Government said its
investigation produced no solid leads, and there was no
evidence to implicate LPDR officials in Vue Mai's
disappearance.  In 1991 Vue Mai had been evacuated from a
refugee camp in Thailand.  A grenade was thrown at his house in
the camp after he spoke out in favor of voluntary repatriation,
which the Lao insurgents have opposed.

     c.  Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading
         Treatment or Punishment

The Penal Code prohibits torture or mistreatment of prisoners,
and the police do not appear to use torture or abuse during
arrest and detention.  Jail conditions, however, are harsh, and
prisoners are routinely denied family visitations and proper
medical care.  Prisoners in some jails reportedly must resort
to bribing their guards to obtain food and medicines.

Hmong community
Anne Fadiman, author of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, said that Merced was "most intensely Hmong place in the United States." As of 1997 Fresno, California and the Minneapolis – Saint Paul area have larger Hmong populations than Merced, but Merced has a higher concentration of Hmong residents than those two places. Blia Yao Moua, a Hmong leader in the area, said that the concentration "lets us keep more Hmong culture here than in Vientiane."[17]

Tactical Briefs #1, 15 February 1998
We've added a new page "Tactical Briefs". The purpose of our Tactical Briefs page is to sell you ballistic protection for your privates. We're kidding! The REAL concept of this page is to serve as an informal means to announce recent changes to our web site as well as to provide you brief articles of interest and commentary on current events. AK-47/SKS 7.62x39mm Cartridge Wound BallisticsRemember the tragic 1989 Stockton (California) school yard shooting in which 35 school children and adults were shot by gunman Patrick Purdy, who was armed with a Chinese Norinco AK-47 type semi-automatic rifle? In response to immense news media exaggerations about the wounding effects of bullets fired from AK-47 type rifles, Col. Martin L. Fackler, M.D., (a former Vietnam combat trauma surgeon) of the U.S. Army Wound Ballistics Laboratory published an article in the Journal of Trauma to correct and clarify the news media falsehoods. We’ve located a slightly different version of that article in a very remote location of the web for you. Unfortunately, the article appears to be incomplete, but the portion which has been published is quite informative. Click here to go to Fackler Stockton article.
In light of recent fatal shootings of police officers in Tacoma (Washington) and Portland (Oregon) involving SKS carbines, the 7.62x39mm cartridge WILL NOT penetrate NIJ Level III or IV body armor. The 7.62x39mm cartridge propels its bullet at a velocity of approximately 2400 feet per second. Level III armor stops 5.56x45mm (.223 Remington) M-16 bullets (3100 fps) as well as 7.62x51mm (.308 Winchester) M-14 bullets (2800 fps). Level IV armor protects against steel-core armor-piercing M-1 Garand (30.06 Springfield) bullets (2900 fps). For more information about National Institute of Justice (NIJ) body armor threat level ratings, click here.

Gangsta Shooting Method
In the January 1998 issue of Handguns, gunwriter Massad Ayoob investigates "gangsta-style shooting," a method of shooting being popularized by the entertainment media.
Gangsta-style shooting is an unorthodox one-handed combat handgun stance wherein the weapon is canted 90 degrees from "normal." This unconventional shooting method is appearing more and more frequently in movies and television.
When Hollywood first introduced us to gangsta-style shooting it was met with snickers of derision from firearms instructors and experienced shooters, who quickly recognized it as an inferior technique. However, Ayoob mentions his encounter with an unnamed European armed service that was teaching its personnel to shoot gangsta-style as the technique of choice. According to Ayoob, their reasoning was: "Americans are on top of pistols, and they have their best people as technical advisors for their films, so it must be the thing to do."
It’s not uncommon for new shooting students to inquire of their instructors why they aren’t being taught this specific technique. After all, it’s new, they’ve seen it on TV and in the movies, it looks "wuz-up cuz" cool and cold-killer businesslike, so it obviously must be better than the old fashioned methods!
If you’re a firearms instructor, this would be a good handout article for your new students. In it Ayoob conjectures about the origins of the practice, and discusses a few shooting incidents that he’s personally aware of in which this trendy street technique was used. He also puts gangsta-style to the test, with very poor results.
Ayoob, Massad: "‘Gangsta’ Shooting: Does it Work?", Handguns 12(1): 24-27, 69-71, January 1998.
