EL DORADO – The suspect in a recent bomb threat at Folsom Lake College’s El Dorado Center was arrested Thursday night and is being held at the El Dorado County Jail.

Jason La Rue, 22, of Gold River, was arrested for false bomb report and possession of a weapon on school grounds.
At 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Los Rios Police about a subject with a gun at the college’s El Dorado Center on Green Valley Road. Los Rios Police was holding La Rue in custody at the time.

A suspicious device found in a wing of UC Merced's Kolligian Library was removed by the Merced Police Department's bomb squad on Tuesday.
The package, which was in a plastic bag, was not detonated, according to Cmdr. Dave Alcaraz with the bomb squad. "We actually X-rayed it first and determined there was no explosives in it. We carried it out," Alcaraz said.

The incident is under investigation, according to Rita Spaur, chief of police for the UC Merced Police Department.

The 55-year-old former "NBC Nightly News" anchor, who suffers from bipolar disorder, has claimed in the lawsuit that the newspaper tricked her into an interview she believed was for an article on mental health issues. Thesmokinggun.com Web site reported Pauley's comments were used as part of an advertising campaign for a drug supplement.

Pauley has worked with several mental health groups since she revealed her own disorder in 2004, and she claimed the paper completely misled her in terms of the October 2005 "special advertising supplement."

The published article ultimately promoted psychotherapeutic drugs sold by pharmaceutical companies such as Eli Lilly, which was not something Pauley said she agreed to do.

Pauley is seeking unspecified damages from DeWitt Publishing, which assisted in the article, and from the newspaper, the report said.

As scandals go, it wasn't that big of a deal. But it infuriated people back home and caused a firestorm in Washington. Members of Congress, once again, were playing by different rules than regular people. If they needed extra money, all they had to do was go to the House "bank" and over draw their accounts. At least 355 members (out of 435) had overdrawn their accounts; and about 110 had 'fessed up to it.

And it will be even more vital, Democratic strategists say, should Mr. Kerry win the nomination and take on a president whose popularity is based largely on his regular-guy, emotionally direct appeal.

Love It or Leave It

Chris and I have always talked about moving to another country, specifically before #OWS. I imagined having multiple books of poetry published (the dream is on target); building my resume; charting out a future in academia; and Chris dreamed his crazy-computer-science-minded dreams about making solar robots (which he does) and providing an adequate cushion for us to begin the relocation process. Because that's how you do it, legally - in order to emigrate you must make yourself viable to the receiving country. We contemplated Guatemala, considered South-East Asia, and wished for somewhere like Germany, Iceland or Sweden (but I'm a California girl, having transplanted once to the cold climate, I don't know if I could do that again). After a few passive sessions of wishing on the globe, we settled on Argentina. I researched Universities I could either attend or be employed, and he became instantly lost on the internet researching the cost of an organic, grass-fed, lovely steak dinner.

Today we were driving to Stanford to visit the Cantor Center; I was craving a dose of Rodin in the bleakness of current political events. How nice it would be, I thought, to escape the world for a while and look at the glossy black forms. During the drive we were wrapped in conversation about the recent police brutality on college campuses. College CAMPUSES where free speech, non-violent protest, and activism has its strongest and most sensible crowd. As we drove, Chris read the open letter to the Chancellor of UC Davis. The letter addressed the recent bout of police brutality which included prying mouths open and spraying pepper spray down the throats of students who sat, arms-linked, in agony. In the letter, Nathan Brown an assistant professor in the English department at UC Davis, asked Linda Katehi, the Chancellor, to resign due to her inability to provide a safe environment for her students.

I agreed with Professor Brown and was infuriated. I could feel my blood pressure rising and my body become stiff with worry. How could this happen? This is AMERICA. How does it occur that students, sitting, in non-violent protest, become victims of physical pain? I don't question the police action (because, as a person of color, I expect police to be evil, unless they are the exception to the rule), but I question the one institution I've always believed in: Education. How could a University provide so much education, but make such disgusting decisions regarding civil liberties?

Well, we proceeded with our planned day. We arrived at Stanford later than planned, but ready to take a break from the world of activism and worry. As we emerged from the parking structure on campus, we heard voices shouting in unison. I assumed, because this is Stanford, not Cal, that it was just a bunch of kids getting ready for a pep rally. As we rounded the corner we watched a procession of students yelling "What do we want? JUSTICE! When do we want it? NOW!" I became instantly elated. Had we stumbled upon a demonstration in solidarity with the recent police brutality on the UC campuses? We picked up the pace and caught up.

Sure enough, we had. Chris and I blended in with the early twenty-somthings, and yelled our way around campus. We trailed along in the back and midway through the march I nudged Chris to look behind him, we were now in the middle. He squeezed my arm, as if to say "see, my love, people care".

And sometimes, in this country, we do not care. Or we are distracted. The clamor of television, celebrities, and consumerism becomes so loud, so overpowering that the country seems lost. The overpowering diegetic nature of our lives: the worlds within worlds within worlds where information and power and civil liberties and love and peace are diluted with clothing and shopping and doggy pajamas and new release movies and everyday tasks and going to the museum; everything becomes lost in the shuffle of being lost in the shuffle of being American. And that's why we contemplated leaving America. It isn't slow enough for us, or clean enough for us, or progressive enough or nice enough or loving enough or peaceful enough.

But stumbling upon the cavalcade today made me realize that there might still be a glimmer in the darkness. That we, as a country, can redeem ourselves. We could cash in our trademarked blinders for clarity and care. That all is not lost.

When we considered emigrating to another country a couple years ago, it seemed difficult. Now, it seems to be the easiest route: leave the mess of America to the mass of Americans. I don't know if I want to leave anymore, I've never backed out of a challenge before. I sure as hell won't do it now.

The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself,” writes Chris Anders of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office.
Under the ‘worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial’ provision of S.1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which is set to be up for a vote on the Senate floor Monday, the legislation will “basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield,” said Sen. Superintendent of Schools Philip A. Streifer said the 16-year-old boy, who was not identified by authorities, was brought to the school's main office to be questioned by school officials and police while the lockdown was in place. "We quickly made the decision to go into lockdown," Streifer said. "Everything was cancelled, including the pep rally, and students remained [were trapped] in their classrooms with their teachers." [When there's a potential shooter at a school, WHY go into 'lockdown?' To trap the students so the shooter can kill more of them? That appears to be the goal of the 'lockdown.']

Tokyo to require companies to stockpile for next major earthquake 24 Nov 2011 The government of Tokyo is to require companies and organisations in the city to stockpile food, water, blankets and other emergency supplies to be ready for the major [HAARP-generated] quake that is expected to strike the city in the next two decades. Nine months after the magnitude-9 Great East Japan Earthquake devastated the north-east of the country, resulting in around 20,000 deaths, the Japanese capital is bracing itself for a similar disaster. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been updating its disaster plans since March 11 and will release an ordinance in the New Year that will require companies to store sufficient emergency supplies for their staff for three days.

Arctic sea ice loss unprecedented in 1,450 years 23 Nov 2011 The recent loss of sea ice in the Arctic is greater than any natural variation in the past 1½ millennia, a Canadian study shows. In September, Germany's University of Bremen reported that sea ice had hit a record low, based on data from a Japanese sensor on NASA's Aqua satellite. The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center, using a different satellite data set, reported that the sea ice coverage in 2011 was the second-lowest on record, after the record set in 2007.

17 Detroit Officers Suspended After Walkout

After walking off of the job Friday, 17 Detroit police officers have been suspended.

Nov. 22--After walking off of the job Friday, 17 Detroit police officers have been suspended, pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs investigation, Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. said in a statement today.

The officers, from the Northeastern District, left their post between 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, just days after Detroit Mayor Dave Bing proposed a 10% pay cut for police and fire personnel.
The officers are alleged to be in violation of a state statute entitled "Participation in a Strike."
"The allegations, if founded, are a breach of the public trust and as such presented a very dangerous situation for citizens of the city of Detroit and members of the Detroit Police Department," Godbee said in the statement.
Over the weekend, Godbee took to the Web, addressing his officers in a video posted over the weekend and calling layoffs are a "worst case scenario."
In the video, Godbee said Bing has "firmly committed that he would not gut public safety to achieve the city's financial goals."
Godbee said there have been "wild rumors" that there would be hundreds of layoffs. He said the numbers being speculated are false, adding that the unions that represent Detroit's officers are negotiating with the administration and trying to reach concessions.
"So, as we work toward concessions, what we will look like after that is done, none of us really know," Godbee said, adding that "layoffs will be a worst case, last-ditch scenario."
He said the rumors need to stop.
"So lets take a deep breath," Godbee said in the video. "Lets step back and lets remember what we are here to do. We're here to serve. We're here to protect. We are the last hope for a lot of people. We provide protection. We save lives."
In a statement over the weekend, Godbee said the department's Internal Affairs will investigate the officers who left their shifts early Friday.
"Preliminary information leads me to believe this is a concerted effort isolated to one shift at one district," he said
In his video over the weekend, Godbee encouraged frustrated officers to speak with their supervisors and command officers.
"But lets remain professional," he said. "And I think the best case we can make for what we mean to the city of Detroit is to continue to go out, lock up bad guys, continue to save lives, continue to make sure that we make Detroit a safer place."
