Thompson, a millionaire, made a lot of money from racing, but he was also a big spender. For his marriage to Trudy in 1971 he flew 300 guests from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for a lavish ceremony at Caesars Palace. And in the boom-or-bust racing business, cash flow problems can leave a promoter dry when he most needs to be liquid. Last week, some of Thompson's former racing associates were wondering if his death might have been the result of too many missed loan payments to the free-lance bankers with whom he might have done business.

Murder, investigation, and associated trials
On March 16, 1988, Mickey Thompson and his wife Trudy were killed by two gunmen at their home in Bradbury, California in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.[23]
On the morning of the murder two gunmen waited outside of the Thompson home for Mickey and Trudy to leave for the day - Mickey opened the garage door for Trudy to pull out in her vehicle, and as he headed for his own vehicle to pull out of the garage the gunmen attacked, shooting and wounding Mickey and then dragging him out into the driveway, and then one of the gunmen went after Trudy as she was driving down the driveway in her vehicle and shot and killed her. The gunman then came back up the driveway where the other gunman was watching over Mickey and shot Mickey in the head, killing him. The gunmen then made their escape on the bicycles that they had ridden to the Thompson residence.
Mickey, his wife and his pets are interred in the Rose Hills Memorial Park, in Whittier, California.
An intense police investigation led nowhere until thirteen years after their deaths, when former business partner Michael Frank Goodwin was charged in Orange County, California with the murders.[23] However, that case was overturned on jurisdictional grounds by the California District Court of Appeal. On June 8, 2004, Goodwin was formally charged in Pasadena in Los Angeles County. In October 2006, a Pasadena Superior Court judge ordered Goodwin to stand trial for the murders.
On January 4, 2007 a jury found Michael Goodwin guilty of two counts of murder in the death of Mickey Thompson and his wife. Goodwin was sentenced to two consecutive life-without-parole terms for the murders of Thompson and his wife. The judge also denied Goodwin's motion for a new trial.
The murder investigation was the subject of the April 28, 2007 episode of the CBS television program 48 Hours Mystery.
The murder investigation was also the subject of an episode of NBC's Unsolved Mysteries and TruTV's Murder by the Book.
A local band in Rhode Island, That'll Learn Ya, wrote a song about the incident, titled "Murder of the Speed King".

Some of the 'fruit' from this effort for Pontiac was land speed reconds and runs in 1959 and 1960 at Bonneville. In 1960, M/T drove his 4 engined, Pontiac powered, Challenger to a 406mph average in a single pass. At the time, that made him the fastest man on wheels regardless of type ( wheel driven, thrust propelled, jets, rockets, etc,). In 1961 Pontiac power crushed many standing mile and kilo records at March AFB in Ca. Many records were also set on the water with Pontiac power.
In the spring of 1962, M/T company developed a HEMI head and related parts to fit the Pontiac engine. Chrysler had gotten out of the HEMI business in 1958 and no one had messed with HEMI stuff in about 3-4 years.
By late summer, the parts were ready, M/T & company assembled it on one of their rail dragsters and headed for the biggest drag race of them all, the US Indy Nationals. as a result, they ended up beating EVERYONE and took Top Eliminator. As an example of who they beat...they kicked Connie Kalitta in the semis and beat Don Garlits in the final to take the win.
Things were going very well in the racing world for Pontiac in 1962, but that ended about mid year for the 1963 models in Januarly. and as they say.... the rest is history.
Here are some pics of some of the HEMI stuff I have. I'll be posting more and if anyone wants to share what they know, or has questions, about the Pontiac HEMI, I encourage all to participate.
I will have my M/T HEMI stuff on display at my Pontiac Heaven event and also at the Nostalgia drags the following day here in Phoenix April 4,5 at Speedworld.

Authorities say the former promoter had talked of killing Thompson rather than pay him the court judgment Thompson had won.
At a preliminary hearing three years ago, Gregory Keay said Goodwin, his cousin, told him that before Thompson could collect his money he would "have him wasted." Goodwin's former girlfriend testified that he boasted to her that he "got away with it" after showing her a tape of the television show Unsolved Mysteries that focused on the case.
After Thompson's death, Goodwin and his wife at the time left the country and cruised the Caribbean on their $400,000 boat for three years.
He ran into legal trouble after their return and was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for lying on a loan application.
All the while, Campbell was pressing authorities to reopen the murder case and look at Goodwin as a suspect. Campbell, a former mayor of San Juan Capistrano with wide political connections, also became an outspoken, nationally known victims' rights advocate as she pursued her brother's case.

MIT dean resigns in lying scandal
The dean of admissions at one of America's most prestigious schools resigned on Thursday after the university discovered she had lied about her academic credentials.
Marilee Jones, who joined the staff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1979 to lead the recruitment of women at the university, stepped down from her post after admitting that she had "misrepresented her academic degrees to the institute," according to a statement posted on MIT's Web site.
"I misrepresented my academic degrees when I first applied to MIT 28 years ago and did not have the courage to correct my resume when I applied for my current job or at any time since," Jones said in a posting on the school's Web site.

"I am deeply sorry for this and for disappointing so many in the MIT community and beyond who supported me, believed in me, and who have given me extraordinary opportunities."
Patti Richards, spokeswoman for MIT, said the school had received information about Jones' credentials and investigated them. "At various times she claimed to have received degrees from Albany Medical College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Union College and we confirmed that she had not graduated from any of these schools."
"This is a sad and unfortunate event," said Daniel E. Hastings, dean for undergraduate education at the Cambridge school, in a Web posting. "But the integrity of the institute is our highest priority, and we cannot tolerate this kind of behavior."

Stuart Schmill, MIT's senior associate director of admissions, has been named the interim director of admissions.

Citation for Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Award, 2008:
CITATION
Mr. John P. Wheeler distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service to the United States as the Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, the Pentagon, Washington, District of Columbia, from 3 November 2005 to 20 June 2008. During this period, Mr. Wheeler’s unwavering integrity, devotion to duty and steadfast leadership led to a number of successful initiatives across the Air Force.
Grasping the growing vulnerability of our weapon systems to Cyber intrusions, he worked tirelessly to drive the activation of Air Force Cyber Command. His visionary efforts were instrumental in the creation of the Cyber Research Center at the Air Force Institute of Technology; the first two graduates of the United States Air Force Academy to enter the Air Force Institute of Technology Cyber Master’s Program; the stand-up of the Air Force Cyber School; and an increased emphasis on Air Force recruitment efforts for officers and enlisted for Cyber careers.
His seasoned experience and knowledge proved invaluable as he helped formulate advice on initiatives such as Joint Basing, Recapitalization, ROVER precision strike data for Army and Marine troops, Acquisition, and a myriad of legislative initiatives facing the Air Force.
His day-to-day interactions with the Office of the Secretary of Defense enhanced relations and ensured streamlined timely responses. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Mr. Wheeler in the dedication of service to his Country reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
