They're pissed off at American greed and social injustice. They're relatively leaderless but well connected through social media. And they're gonna Occupy Phoenix on October 15.
The "Occupy Wall Street" movement that led to 700 or so arrests in New York City over the weekend is catching like wildfire, with more left-leaning protests planned for major cities in the upcoming days and weeks. Crowds began camping outside Los Angeles City Hall on Saturday.
The Phoenix version is ramping up with a Web page, plus info feeds on Facebook and Twitter.
According to the Facebook site, organizers want protesters to "flood into Cesar Chavez Plaza" on October 15. Minutes from a meeting of organizers yesterday, however, seem to indicate the group intends to march to the State Capitol the day before. From the minutes:
26) Start at the capital and end at cesar chavez plaza.
27) End Friday march at 5pm so the news can cover it.

The planned rally echoes larger protests recently held in New York, Boston, and Los Angeles, demonstrating against “financial crimes” of large Wall Street institutions. Several protesters were recently arrested in New York in response to their “Occupy Wall Street” demonstration.

Student protest at UC Berkeley building ends

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Police say that a demonstration involving dozens of student protesters who had occupied a building on the University of California, Berkeley campus has dispersed.
UC Berkeley police Lt. Marc DeCoulode said late Thursday that the majority of the crowd left after police responded when some of the protesters began throwing rocks. He said the heavier police presence "stabilized" the situation.
DeCoulode said one protester was arrested, but the charge was not immediately clear.
Demonstrators upset about tuition hikes and state budget cuts held a noon rally on Sproul Plaza on Thursday before entering Tolman Hall.
Protesters say the University of California is becoming increasingly unaffordable as the 10-campus UC system raises tuition in response to state cuts to higher education.

Welcome to OCCUPY TOGETHER, an unofficial hub for all of the events springing up across the country in solidarity with Occupy Wall St. As we have followed the news on facebook, twitter, and the various live feeds across the internet, we felt compelled to build a site that would help spread the word as more protests organize across the country. We hope to provide people with information about events that are organizing, ongoing, and building across the U.S. as we, the 99%, take action against the greed and corruption of the 1%.
We will try our best to provide you with the most accurate information possible. However, we are just a few volunteers and errors are bound to occur. Please be patient as we get this site off the ground and populated and please contact us if you have any info on new events, corrections, or suggestions for this site. You can contact us at info[at]occupytogether[dot]org.
We will only grow stronger in our solidarity and we will be heard, not just in New York, but in echoes across this nation.
For more information about us, the movement, and answers to questions, please check out our FAQ.
Important note: Occupy Together will never ask for any monetary donations. We suggest that, if you want to donate monetarily, that you visit this site to help those who currently Occupy Wall St.

WASHINGTON -- A group of roughly 30 Occupy DC protesters remained in McPherson Square on Wednesday, gathering for a noontime "General Assembly" meeting to discuss their ongoing action in the nation's capital, now in its fifth day.
The first order of business? Finding someone to speak with a member of the Chilean media. One man offered himself up as a native Spanish speaker. The tough part of the meeting was over.
Eric Sponaugle, wearing purple sunglasses, a purple tie and feathers in his hair, handed out fliers while announcing the day's protests. Starting just after the assembly, the group would be heading to the job-cuts rally on Capitol Hill. Later, closer to 5 p.m., they planned to march on the Washington Ideas Forum being held at the Newseum, where former Vice President Dick Cheney and current Vice President Joe Biden were expected to be in attendance.
Occupy DC has begun to distribute a one-page flier which lists the group's direct action as including one to two marches "organized daily." The occupation period, according to the page: "INDEFINITE."

Watch out, world, Vladimir Putin has got a plan.
The Russian prime minister on Tuesday floated the idea of forming a "Eurasion Union" of former Soviet states that he says would be similar to the European Union.
Putin said the goal would be to "create real conditions to change the geopolitical and geo-economic configuration of the entire continent and have an undoubtedly positive global effect," according to the BBC.
Many of the nations Putin wants to see integrated already are heading in that direction. Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan are ready to proceed with an E.U.-like economic integration and are set to introduce unified market rules and regulations at the start of 2012. Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are also expected to join the grouping.

SANTA CRUZ -- Around 200 people gathered on a drizzly Tuesday evening to discuss creating Occupy Santa Cruz, a local reaction to the series of protests occurring around the nation.
The first meeting, or general assembly, of Occupy Santa Cruz was in Laurel Park, drawing a small crowd that quickly grew, with many of those attending holding homemade cardboard signs with slogans like "End corporate greed," "We are the 99 percent," and "Corporations really aren't people."
