-Media Matters For America: For a number of years, the Open Society Institute gave indirect funding―filtering its grants first through other Soros-backed operations―to this “progressive research and information center” which “monitor[s]” and “correct[s] conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.” In October 2010, Soros announced that he would soon donate $1 million directly to Media Matters.
-Sundance Institute: In 1996, Soros launched his Soros Documentary Fund to produce “social justice” films that would “spur awareness, action and social change.” In 2001, this Fund became part of actor-director Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute. Between 1996 and 2008, OSI earmarked at least $5.2 million for the production of several hundred documentaries, many of which were highly critical of capitalism, American society, or Western culture generally. In 2009, Soros pledged another $5 million to the Sundance Institute.

Let me reiterate the “barriers” to appropriate health care: too many people living for years after being diagnosed with incurable diseases, too many people living too long in general, technological advances that have increased the chance of survival for patients with cardiac and respiratory failure, an emphasis on patients rights—and the rights of the individuals in general,  and the cost of treating patients with chronic conditions.
You see, under socialized medicine these all really are “barriers.”  You need to understand that when the government is paying for health care, it has no incentive to keep alive the elderly or the infirm.  It actually has a reverse incentive: every older person, and every disabled person, who dies prematurely saves the government a lot of money—not only in medical expenses but in Social Security outlays.
But why would the entry in Wikipedia get the Project on Death in America’s start date wrong?  Because it began in 1994, one year after Hillary Clinton’s health care debacle.  George Soros realized that one of the main “barriers” to instituting socialized medicine was America’s’ shocking selfishness in wanting to extend individual lives at the expense of the collective.
Attitudes needed to be altered.  Morality had to be modified.
Thanks to the Wayback Machine, we can see that a great deal of the Project on Death in America’s attention was focused on re-shaping American culture:

Excerpt:
Redford has been a major funder of leftwing filmmakers for decades. He provided seed money to help Michael Moore get started. His Sundance Institute, Sundance Film Festival, Sundance Cable Channel and Sundance Documentary Fund all specialize in promoting far-left films and programming.

That’s where the Soros connection comes in. On September 16, 2002, Robert Redford proudly announced at a press conference that he was launching a Sundance International Documentary Fund with $4.6 million in seed money from George Soros’ Open Society Institute (OSI). The new fund would underwrite films aimed at “promoting social justice and social change.”

Redford characterized his new relationship with OSI as a “partnership.” A press release from the Sundance Institute explains how the partnership works. It notes that “the OSI grant supports the transition of the Soros Documentary Fund, originally established in 1996, to the Sundance Institute …” In effect, the Soros Documentary Fund simply changed its name to the Sundance International Documentary Fund. Diane Weyermann, who had directed the "old" fund for Soros, stayed on to direct the "new" fund for Redford.

The deal helped both parties. Redford got access to Soros’ money. Soros got to camouflage his propaganda operation under the apple-pie image of Robert Redford and the respected Sundance label.

“With its… proven success in supporting projects that receive widespread public distribution and acclaim … Sundance Institute offers a compelling home and promising future for the [Soros Documentary] Fund,” commented Soros operative Diane Weyermann.

It was developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media[1][2] together with World Security Institute.[8] The idea for the film first occurred to the producers when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Al Gore after the success of his documentary about global warming, An Inconvenient Truth.[5] Diane Weyermann of Participant Media asked Walker if she was interested in directing a film about nuclear weapons, and Walker said yes.[9] More than 84 people were interviewed for the film.[9] Global Zero, an international organization promoting the elimination of nuclear weapons, provided production assistance for the film.[10]

Shorting the euro is a trade that is so obvious that it’s amazing everyone isn’t doing it. This observer can’t help but realize that smart hedge fund investors like George Soros look for clashes between governments and markets in which the governments’ position is untenable, and then they short the governments’ securities in any way they can. It's not hard to imagine hedge fund managers chanting, "Power to the people," along with the Greek protesters as the funds make billions off the protesters.

Ickes is "technically a volunteer for the campaign known as Hillary for President"—is "Adviser to the Campaign Manager" for Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.)'s 2008 presidential campaign, The Politico reported April 18, 2007.
Ickes' firm—Ickes and Enright Group—is part of Washington D.C.-based lobbying firm Griffin Johnson Dover & Stewart. Ickes' "lobbying clients have included a nursing home association, the insurance company Equitas, the Service Employees International Union and a subsidiary of Verizon communications." [1]
"Perhaps Ickes' largest-scale project is Catalist, a private company born out of his open distrust in the ability of Democratic Party chairman Howard Dean to build a voter database to rival that of the Republicans. Ickes is president of the company. ...
"Catalist had 19 clients last electoral cycle, many of them union-backed political operations and advocacy groups, such as the Sierra Club and the AFL-CIO, Ickes said. ... Adding a bit of delicacy to his position, Catalist is in talks with the Clinton campaign as well as rival Democratic primary campaigns." [2]
Ickes is also a member of the Democratic National Committee Rules and Bylaws Committee.

Harold M. Ickes
Born September 4, 1939 in Washington, DC, Harold McEwan Ickes is a longtime Democrat operative widely recognized as the chief organizer of the so-called Shadow Party, a nationwide network of more than five-dozen unions, non-profit activist groups, and think tanks whose agendas are ideologically to the left, and which are engaged in campaigning for the Democrats. During the 2004 presidential race, Democrat strategist Howard Wolfson told New York magazine that -- outside of the John Kerry campaign -- Ickes was "the most important person in the Democratic Party today." Ickes hails from a prominent political family. His father Harold LeClair Ickes served as Secretary of the Interior from 1933 to 1946, under Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman. In 1961 Ickes enrolled at Stanford University, where he fell under the influence of Professor Allard Kenneth Lowenstein, known as the "Pied Piper" for his ability to seduce idealistic young students into the New Left. Ickes met Bill Clinton while both were working on Operation Pursestrings, a grassroots lobbying effort aimed at pushing through the 1970 Hatfield-McGovern Amendment to cut off all military aid to South Vietnam. Ickes joined the Clinton White House on January 4, 1994, and would serve for three years as Deputy White House Chief of Staff for Political Affairs and Policy. Ickes would later surface at the center of the so-called "Teamstergate" scandal -- a complex money-laundering scheme in which several high-level Democrat leaders and union bosses who were directly implicated in the case mysteriously escaped prosecution. Ickes played a central role in creating the Democrat Shadow Party. After passage of the McCain-Feingold Act of March 27, 2002, Ickes helped put Shadow Party architect George Soros together with activists Andrew Stern, Ellen R. Malcolm, Steven Rosenthal, Gina Glantz, Cecile Richards, and other leftwing Democrats who were seeking ways to circumvent McCain-Feingold's soft-money ban. Working closely with Soros, Ickes personally helped launch six of the seven organizations that formed the Shadow Party’s core during the 2004 election, including America Coming Together, America Votes, the Center for American Progress, Joint Victory Campaign 2004, the Media Fund, and the Thunder Road Group.

Many of Ms. Malcolm's colleagues say she has a way of connecting that is disarming. Friends describe her as a master storyteller who translates political jargon into simple language. The great-granddaughter of an I.B.M. founder, she is independently wealthy, and having donated hundreds of thousands herself, some friends say she can speak to donors as an equal.

AMERICA COMING TOGETHER (ACT) BACKGROUNDER

March 2005

General Information

ACT Is “Mother Of All 527s.” (Emily Pierce, “527s Cast Shadow Over Convention,” Roll Call, 7/27/04)

“ACT Was Founded In August 2003 When [George] Soros Announced He Was Giving $10 Million To The Organization To Ensure That Mr. Bush Was Not Re-Elected.” (Jerry Seper, “Soros-Supported Voter-Registration Drive Probed,” The Washington Times, 10/20/04)

In 2004, ACT Was Led By Emily’s List President Ellen Malcolm, Former AFL-CIO Organizer Steve Rosenthal And Former Clinton Deputy Chief Of Staff Harold Ickes. “This was the year of the old-fashioned ground-war political campaign, the kind fought door to door. And the most important battalion on the Democratic side was America Coming Together (ACT). A massive get-out-the-vote project focused on 17 battleground states, ACT was the co-creation of Steve Rosenthal, a former head of the AFL-CIO political operation, who founded it last year with, among others, Harold Ickes, Bill Clinton’s former deputy chief of staff, and Ellen Malcolm, head of the pro-choice advocacy group Emily’s List. At $120 million, the money they raised was six times greater than the Democratic Party has traditionally taken in for turnout efforts.” (Richard Lacayo and Joel Stein, “The Outside Players,” Time, 11/15/04)

Excerpt:
Working For Us PAC (WFUPAC) is a political action committee established in January 2007 after the Democratic Party won both houses of Congress [1] in the 2006 elections by, "among others, veteran labor strategist Steve Rosenthal, and it's backed by unions, such as the Teamsters, Steelworkers and SEIU, that traditionally cultivate close relationships with Democratic politicians. But Working For Us is following the confrontational approach of top liberal bloggers, promising primaries to depose disloyal incumbents. Rosenthal says the group is a 'marriage of the grassroots and the netroots,' uniting door-to-door organizers, unions and bloggers in an effort to 'change the tenor of politics'," Ari Melber wrote May 2, 2007, in The Nation.
"The strategy is set by two boards made up of traditional labor leaders like SEIU secretary-treasurer Anna Burger and pioneers from the Internet left like MoveOn.org heads and Markos Moulitsas, founder of the top Democratic blog Daily Kos," Melber wrote.
