Eleanor Mondale dead (Jimmy Carter's VP's daughter)

One target of Lewinsky's wrath was Eleanor Mondale, the CBS newswoman and daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale. Lewinsky threw a fit outside the White House just weeks before her affair with Clinton became public, when she learned Clinton was meeting with Mondale at the same time Secret Service guards denied her access.

In April 1998, former White House steward Michael McGrath detailed for Star magazine what he believed were Oval Office assignations between Clinton and former West Wing secretary Debra Schiff. The New York Times reported that Schiff's access to Clinton was second only to Hillary Clinton's and that of Vice President Al Gore. As the Lewinsky case heated up, Schiff was transferred to the State Department.

Ms. Mondale, the middle of three children born to Walter and Joan Mondale, campaigned for her father in his failed race to unseat President Ronald Reagan in 1984. She also made calls in 2002 in her father’s last campaign, when Mr. Mondale took the ballot slot of Senator Paul Wellstone, a Minnesota Democrat who died in a plane crash just days before the election.

Eleanor Mondale Biography

Political Relative / Actor

Eleanor Mondale is the daughter of Walter Mondale, vice president under Jimmy Carter and later U.S. ambassador to Japan. Eleanor Mondale began her television career at a Minneapolis local affiliate, then moved up to reporting for the E! Online cable channel and eventually the CBS show This Morning. She has also had small roles in a few movies and TV shows. In 1998 she gained extra notoriety when an Oval Office meeting she had with President Bill Clinton was mentioned in the Kenneth Starr report. In June of 2005 she revealed that she was being treated for life-threatening brain tumors and that she had been given six months to live; however, in August of 2006 she announced that the tumors had disappeared. That same month she began co-hosting a radio talk show on Minneapolis radio station WCCO. Eleanor Mondale's cancer returned in 2009, and she underwent more treatment in 2010.
Extra credit: Mondale married Minnesota musician and composer Chan Poling in June of 2005; according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, it was Mondale's third marriage.

REPORTER DIDN'T NEED STARR-DOM

Sunday, September 20th 1998, 2:05AM
LOS ANGELES Glamorous TV reporter Eleanor Mondale was dragged into President Clinton's Zippergate scandal when Kenneth Starr's report revealed her 1996 White House visit with him sparked a jealous rage by Monica Lewinsky.
But her cameo appearance in Starr's inquiry wasn't the first time the leggy 38-year-old middle child of former Vice President Walter Mondale found herself providing grist for the gossip mills.
Ever since she wore a sexy black velvet and satin tuxedo to President Jimmy Carter's inaugural ball when she was 17, the blond 5-foot-9 entertainment reporter for CBS' "This Morning" has kept people talking, especially when she joined President Clinton for early morning jogs in Washington, D.C., and Santa Monica, Calif., in 1996.
"She's just a very colorful person," said Cheryl Johnson, who writes the cheeky "C.J." gossip column for the Minneapolis Star Tribune in Mondale's hometown.
Mondale moved from Chicago to Minneapolis in 1989, after her 16-month marriage to Chicago Bear Keith Van Horne crashed. Footloose and single, Mondale popped up in C.J.'s copy almost 200 times in the early 1990s usually for questionable party behavior.
"She's flamboyant, and there's nothing wrong with it," said Johnson. "But it's gonna call attention to you in Minneapolis. She's a big woman and extremely fit. She had a proclivity for skin-tight outfits, she had a snazzy car, a Jaguar, and flowing blond hair."
Working as a radio personality and local TV reporter at that time, Mondale caught the public eye when she went out on the town.
"Everywhere she went, people would call me up and say she did this or that. And when I'd call her for comment, she'd always say: 'C.J., it must be somebody that looks like me.' " Johnson recalled.
In that era, Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine wrote a cover story on Mondale headlined "Wild Child." In 1991, Mondale married popular Minneapolis disc jockey Greg (Thunder) Malban, but that union lasted only three months, spawning more gossip.
But Kelly Vesterby, Eleanor Mondale's business partner for the last eight years in a Minneapolis workout studio called The Firm, said the wild-girl press reports are one-sided.
"In my opinion, she's a bright, energetic, sincere, passionate girl who is committed to her family, friends, pets and career," said Vesterby.
Ultimately, the gossip played a role in Mondale's departure from WCCO-TV in Minneapolis in 1991.
"I hear she [Mondale] says I ran her out of town," Johnson said jokingly. "I'm told the Mondales are mad at me. But I knew much more interesting stuff than I wrote. Given the double standard between what men are allowed to do and what women are allowed to do, I always cut her a little slack in what I printed."
Despite Mondale's colorful past, Johnson thinks she got a raw deal with the mention in the Starr report.
"The report drips with innuendo," said Johnson.
Mondale, who previously hosted a talk show for the E! cable channel, declined to be interviewed about the Starr report. But last week she issued a terse statement through her publicist.
"I was in Washington to cover the Kennedy Center honors," she said. "I briefly stopped at the White House to say hello . . . as our families have been friendly for decades. . . . Ms. Lewinsky's speculation is baseless."
Mondale's father and her fiance, Long Island plastic surgeon Dr. Joe DeBellis, also did not return calls.
Despite all the smoke and rumors, Johnson doubts there's any romantic link between Eleanor Mondale and the President. "As far as her and Clinton, that's a stretch. She looks so much better than the women he messes around with," Johnson added.

Michael Jackson Thanks Jesse Jackson, Ron Burkle for Financial Advice

Sunday, June 17, 2007

NEW YORK —  The Rev. Jesse Jackson and billionaire Ron Burkle came through with key advice to save singer Michael Jackson from financial disaster when he was fighting child molestation charges, Jackson says in a court deposition.
The Daily News said in Sunday editions it reviewed seven hours of transcripts, finding that the singer believed disloyal advisers took advantage of him financially before a Santa Maria, Calif., jury acquitted him of child molestation in June 2005.
Jackson testified that during his trial he received wise advice during bathroom break cell phone calls with Burkle, the billionaire friend of former President Bill Clinton.
Burkle brought in Jesse Jackson, who has known Michael Jackson since he was a child, to help with the consultations, the newspaper said.
Michael Jackson said in a deposition taken last summer in Paris that the entertainment industry was "full of sharks, charlatans and impostors."
"Because there's a lot of money involved, there's a bunch of schmucks in there," Jackson said. "It's the entertainment world, full of thieves and crooks. That's not new. Everybody knows that."
The deposition was made in preparation for a civil trial expected to begin this week in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. The case against Jackson was brought by a Hackensack, N.J. finance company that claims Jackson cheated the company of $48 million.

At age 21 Ron Burkle married an 18-year-old clerk he had met in the store: Janet Steeper, a great-grandniece of the Wright brothers, aviation pioneers. They would raise three children; today the youngest, a son, is 14. Curious, given what happened later, that Janet's parents worried about protecting her small inheritance from her new husband.
Early on Ron Burkle took a keen interest in the stock market, becoming a devotee of Warren Buffett and Buffett's sidekick at Berkshire Hathaway (nyse: BRKA - news - people ), Charles Munger. Burkle put $3,000 into American Silver and another metals company because he enjoyed coin collecting; that grew to $30,000. He also invested in what he knew best, grocery store stocks, helped by a sharp eye for undervalued real estate.

Tickets for the event, which was held at entrepreneur Ron Burkle's Green Acres estate, started at $1,000 and raised more than $3 million for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the nonprofit sponsoring the federal court challenge of Proposition 8, known as Perry vs. Schwarzenegger.
The crowd delivered a hearty standing ovation for an unlikely duo, attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson, who represented opposite sides in Bush vs. Gore, the case over the disputed 2000 presidential election, and are now working together to defeat Proposition 8 in court.

Three days before the Strauss decision, the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to challenge the validity of Proposition 8 on behalf of two same-sex couples.[9][10][11] The couples' attorneys included Theodore Boutrous and the two attorneys who opposed each other in the Bush v. Gore case, David Boies and former U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson.[12]

Personal life
Olson has been married four times. Olson's third wife,[8] Barbara Olson, was a passenger on the hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The following year Olson met Lady Booth, a tax attorney and native of Kentucky, and the two were married on October 21, 2006, in Napa County, California.[8]

[edit] Politics

Olson was present at the first meeting of the Federalist Society.[9] He has served on the board of directors of American Spectator magazine.[10] Olson was a prominent critic of Bill Clinton's presidency, and he helped prepare the attorneys of Paula Jones prior to their Supreme Court appearance.[2] Olson's wife, Lady, has described herself as a lifelong registered Democrat.[11] She has contributed to the campaigns of Barack Obama and Rudy Giuliani. Olson served Giuliani's 2008 presidential campaign as judicial committee chairman.[9]
Olson believes there is a constitutional right for same-sex marriage.[12]

[edit] Executive appointment speculation

Prior to President Bush's nomination of D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge John Roberts, Olson was considered a potential nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States to fill Sandra Day O'Connor's post. Following the withdrawal of Harriet Miers' nomination for that post, and prior to the nomination of Third Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Samuel Alito, Olson's name was again mentioned as a possible nominee.
In September 2007, Olson was considered by the Bush administration for the post of Attorney General to succeed Alberto Gonzales. However, the Democratic response was so strongly negative that Bush chose to nominate Michael Mukasey instead.[13]

Excerpts:
1)  Immediately after the first plane hit, Zucker—who had trained for a year as a volunteer firefighter in his hometown of North Massapequa, N.Y.—recognized the threat and walked through the halls with attorney Julissa Gomez and secretary Anne Pampinella, telling people to leave the building.
Once they reached an emergency exit, Pampinella "tried to stop Andrew Zucker, but he returned to the office, apparently to make sure that Joanne Weil and Mark Brisman evacuated," according to the report. Ultimately, the investigator could not determine whether the five Harris Beach employees were killed on the floor, on the stairs or at the express elevator landing on the 78th floor when the second plane hit at 9:03, taking out floors 77 through 85.
By hiring the investigator, "we were able to create a story for the families," Antonucci says. "We had it available. Some of the families chose to take the report and read it. Other family members chose not to."

2) It was a moment of transition for Zucker, whose wife, Erica, lost a child in the spring of 2001, several weeks before the baby was due. He considered opening his own practice before taking the job at Harris Beach, where he soon established a reputation as someone who was willing to work late and come in early.
Zucker was not supposed to be at the office that morning. He and his wife had planned to vote in the mayoral primary. But his wife was newly pregnant and had a difficult night, so he let her sleep and left for the office. They would vote later, he told her when she called that morning.
"He knew she was pregnant, but no one else knew," Saul Zucker says. Andrew Zucker's son was born in February 2002. Now 5, he is close to his father's family and sees them often. Strong-willed and burly like his father, he has many of "the same mannerisms and body language," Sue Zucker says.

Brisman, 34, learned he had been nominated for partner the week before the attack, and he received the honor posthumously in January 2002. Weil, 39, began working at Harris Beach shortly before Zucker, 27, who joined the firm on Aug. 1, 2001. Zucker's widow, Erica, gave birth to their only child, Jason Andrew, five months after he was killed.

I will never forget the call you made to me in the middle of the night on April 1, 2001. You had lost your baby, Abbe. You called me again. You had an emergent motion to argue the next day and couldn’t let your favorite client down. So you asked me to make the court appearance for you.
Another favorite client prompted many more recent phone calls. It was a seemingly no-win case. You were representing a student who was wrongfully expelled from medical school. After your summer of sorrow, you were back. You were the hired gun. You waged a war on your adversaries, the administration of the school.
