Hercules Jolted by Shooting Deaths of Father, Son / Dual-killing is close-knit city's first
The double-slaying of a father and son in their quiet Hercules home has shocked residents of a neighborhood that is more accustomed to having streets roped off for an annual block party than a criminal investigation.
The killings were discovered about 6 p.m. Wednesday when Susan Abernathy, a Chevron chemist, got home from work and found her husband, Neal, and 11-year-old son, Brandon, shot dead in their house.
Police said this is the first double-homicide ever in Hercules, a city of about 18,000 along Interstate 80, and the first murder since 1995. Police boast of low crime rates, and the Hercules-by-the-Bay subdivision is often viewed as a nice, safe area.
