Flotilla and Inmarsat

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleen_Rowley
Excerpt:
In May 2005, Rowley announced that she was considering running against incumbent Representative John Kline for Minnesota's 2nd District seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2006. At the time of her announcement, she had been living in Apple Valley, Minnesota for 15 years. Previously she had voted and identified as a Republican, but on June 27, 2005, Rowley announced that she was entering the race as a DFLer, and officially kicked off her campaign at her home on July 6.[citation needed]
On August 18, 2005 she attended a vigil in Crawford, Texas outside President George W. Bush's ranch requesting that the president meet with Cindy Sheehan to answer Sheehan's questions regarding the War in Iraq and the death of Sheehan's son, Casey.[citation needed]
On January 3, 2006, an unauthorized professionally retouched image appeared on the Rowley campaign website. This image depicted Kline, a retired Colonel of the Marine Corps, as Colonel Klink from Hogan's Heroes. Kline objected to the photo. The campaign removed the image the same day and initiated an investigation. Rowley apologized quickly.[4] The Kline campaign also accused a Rowley supporter, David Bailey, of attempting to make a cash contribution to Kline’s campaign. A cash contribution is not legal and Kline subsequently asserted that this constituted an effort to undermine his campaign apparatus.[citation needed]
Representative John Murtha (D-PA) endorsed Rowley. He visited the district during the campaign and held a rally for Rowley at the local VFW in Rosemount, while veterans protested against them outside. The Rowley campaign subsequently focused efforts on veterans' groups and others with experience that relates directly to the war in Iraq. Obtaining financing for her campaign proved difficult. Opposing an incumbent conservative such as Kline in a conservative district did not attract money from the most robust of Democratic resources such as the DNC.[5]
Kline's campaign achieved a 2-1 advantage in raising funds,[6] and he retained his seat.

The Shadow Factory: The Ultra-Secret NSA from 9/11 to the Eavesdropping on America is a book on the National Security Agency by bestselling author James Bamford.

[edit] Fort Gordon, Georgia

Bamford's book contains a description of a processing center at NSA's Fort Gordon, Georgia facility, and Operation Highlander, with which it was associated. The staff there analyzed satellite telephone signals (like Inmarsat) from all over the Middle East. They performed various operations such as matching up phone numbers with names of organizations or individuals, recording messages, finding the locations of cellphones, call chaining analysis, language identification and translation, and assigning 'importance' numbers to the "cuts" (recordings).
Bamford's book contains the statements of people who worked there, including Adrienne J. Kinne, and John Berry. Berry says that the operation never violated American's rights and contributed a good deal to the war effort. Kinne says that they were listening to the phone calls of Americans in the middle east making calls back to the states, including NGOs, aid workers, and journalists at the Palestine Hotel. Kinne contrasts her years of work before 9/11 in SIGINT and the careful attention paid to USSID 18 with her work after 9/11 and the way USSID 18 was essentially ignored. [1][2] Kinne later became part of Iraq Veterans Against the War. [3]
The NSA Inspector General and the US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) investigated her allegations. They claimed they 'found insufficient evidence to support Kinne's allegations of improper intelligence activities'. Kinne says the NSA IG never even interviewed her. The Congress also questioned NSA and the Army about the matter. [4][5]

Excerpt:
Robert G. Wright, Jr. is an FBI agent who has criticised the FBI's counterterrorist activities in the 1990s, when he worked in the Chicago division on terrorists with links to the Middle East, especially on the issue of money laundering. Specifically, he worked on project Vulgar Betrayal which allegedly implicated Yasin al-Qadi. He wrote a detailed book which the FBI prevented him from publishing with threats of criminal prosecution. [1] He complained that "FBI management intentionally and repeatedly thwarted and obstructed my attempts to launch a more comprehensive investigation to identify and neutralize terrorists."[1][2]
3 months before 9/11 he wrote the following:
"Knowing what I know, I can confidently say that until the investigative responsibilities for terrorism are removed from the FBI, I will not feel safe. The FBI has proven for the past decade it cannot identify and prevent acts of terrorism against the United States and it's citizens at home and abroad. Even worse, there is virtually no effort on the part of the FBI's international terrorism unit to neutralize known and suspected terrorists residing within the United States."[1][3]
After his revelations circa 2002/2003 he was demoted. [1][4]
On May 6, 2009, Judge Gladys Kessler issued a ruling allowing Wright to publish his manuscript.[5] However, the passage of time has diminished interest in the topic, and now Wright is focussed on fighting the system of prepublication review and censorship of Government employee writings[6]
Other FBI agents who supported Wright's allegations were John Vincent and Barry Carmidy.[1]
Michael Chertoff described the situation as 'conspiracy theories'. [1]
According to PBS Frontline, former FBI supervisor Danny Defenbaugh claimed that Wright made "very disparaging racial statements about" Agent Gamal Abdel-Hafiz, an FBI agent who was involved in many counter-terrorism cases. Gamal Abdel-Hafiz accused Wright of religious discrimination[7]

Inside Operation Highlander: the NSA’s Wiretapping of Americans Abroad

Fort_gordon
A top secret NSA wiretapping facility in Georgia accused of spying on Americans illegally was hastily staffed with inexperienced reservists in the months following September 11, where they worked under conflicting orders and with little supervision, according to three former workers at the spy complex.
"Nobody knew exactly what the heck we were doing," said a former translator for the project, code named Highlander, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "We were figuring out the rules as we were going along."
Former Army Reserve linguist Adrienne Kinne, who also worked at the facility at Fort Gordon, won new attention this week for her year-old claim that she and her group intercepted and transcribed satellite phone calls of American civilians in the Middle East for the National Security Agency. Senate intelligence committee chair Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) opened a probe into the alleged abuses after ABC News reported on them Thursday.
Threat Level spoke with Kinne extensively last year about the alleged systematic surveillance of Americans and others operating in the Middle East following the 9/11 attacks. She provided a number of details about some of the calls and how the operation was conducted.

Excerpt:
The company was originally founded in 1979 as the International Maritime Satellite Organization (Inmarsat), a not-for-profit international organization, set up at the behest of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a UN body, for the purpose of establishing a satellite communications network for the maritime community.[2] It began trading in 1982.[3] From the beginning, the acronym "Inmarsat" was used. The intent was to create a self-financing body which would improve safety of life at sea. The name was changed to "International Mobile Satellite Organization" when it began to provide services to aircraft and portable users, but the acronym "Inmarsat" was kept. When the organisation was converted into a private company in 1999, the business was split into two parts: The bulk of the organisation was converted into the commercial company, Inmarsat plc, and a small group became the regulatory body, IMSO.[4] In 2005 Apax Partners and Permira bought shares in the Company. The Company was also first listed on the London Stock Exchange in that year.[5] In March 2008 it was disclosed that U.S. hedge fund Harbinger Capital owned 28% of the company.[6] In July 2009, Inmarsat completed the acquisition of a 19-per-cent stake in SkyWave Mobile Communications Inc., a provider of Inmarsat D+/IsatM2M network services which in turn purchased the GlobalWave business from TransCore.[7] On 15 April 2009 Inmarsat completed the acquisition of satellite communications provider Stratos Global Corporation (Stratos)
Inmarsat won the 2010 MacRobert Award for its Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) service,[8] overcoming the three other shortlisted companies[9]Chas. A. Blatchford & Sons Ltd. for the Echelon hydraulic ankle-foot for amputees, Cobham Technical Services for the Minehound dual sensor land mine detector, and Lucite International UK Ltd for the Alpha process for methyl methacrylate.

More info a lawsuit has been filed in Florida State Court to stop Inmarsat from providing satellite tracking services for the boats in the flotilla of fools. Inmarsat is a British company that provides such services worldwide. Every country in the World requires that boats flying under its flag have such services. The suit was filed through the Israeli human rights group Shurat HaDin.
The suit was filed by Attorney Isaac Jaroslawicz. The plaintiff, Michelle Fendel, a resident of the southern Israeli town of Sderot, asserts in her complaint that under US law, Inmarsat and is officers have aided and abetted terrorism by providing satellite services to the Gaza-bound ships.
Prior to filing the lawsuit, the attorneys for Fendel sent Inmarsat a warning letter demanding that it discontinue all satellite services to the boats being utilized to engaged in hostile operations against Israel. The letter noted that by providing services during the upcoming flotilla, Inmarsat and its corporate officers were violation of US criminal statutes prohibiting the provision of material support for acts of violence and terrorism (18 U.S.C. § 2339A and § 2339B) and the provision of material support for naval expeditions against U.S. allies (18 U.S.C. § 960 and § 962), and would also be held civilly liable for any damages or harm caused by participants in the flotilla.
Heh.
Elder has the complaint embedded on his site. Curiously, all they are seeking is a permanent injunction and a declaratory judgment. It's strange to me that they're not requesting a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction to prevent the satellite tracking services from being provided NOW. Hmmm.

Shurat HaDin Warns Satellite Communication Giant Inmarsat Over Gaza Flotilla June 6, 2011: We are continuing our legal battle against the Islamic terrorists and extremist NGOs organizing the naval flotilla to the Hamas controlled Gaza Strip. Last week we targeted the international insurance companies that provide maritime insurance to the extremists' ships demanding that they terminate their services. Several of the companies, including Lloyds of London, wrote us back saying they would not insure the flotilla boats. Today, Shurat HaDin sent warning letters to the UK and US based global satellite company INMARSAT, stating that it may be liable for massive damages and criminal prosecution if it provides communication services to ships used by suspected terror organizations in the Gaza flotilla planned for late June.

Early last year, we predicted that just as the story of 2004 was the entry of private equity firms into the satellite operator sector, the story of 2005 would be their faster- than-expected exits through initial public offerings (IPOs) and otherwise. It was not much of a prediction, but it proved accurate. The operators concerned were Panamsat Corp., purchased by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, The Carlyle Group and Providence Equity Partners; New Skies Satellites Holdings, purchased by The Blackstone Group; Intelsat, purchased by Apollo Management, Madison Dearborn Partners, Apax Partners and Permira Advisors; Inmarsat, purchased by Apax and Permira; Eutelsat Communications SA, which preceded the 2004 wave in private equity ownership, went through a series of private equity ownership changes late in 2004 and is now owned by Eurazeo S.A., Texas Pacific Group, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, Spectrum Equity Investors and Cinven Ltd.; and Globalstar L.P., purchased out of Chapter 11 proceedings by Thermo Capital Partners.
Four of the six went public in 2005. The IPOs of Panamsat, which went out first in March 2005; New Skies in May and Inmarsat in June have been successes. Inmarsat in particular: since it went public on the London Stock Exchange, the stock has risen 30 percent in the aftermarket; a spectacular result for Apax and Permira.

"Debt," says The Guardian. Matalan is in hock to the tune of £261m. New Look, which is controlled by private-equity groups  Permira and Apax Partners, had hoped to raise £650m from the markets to pay down some of its £1bn debt until fund managers got cold feet. For many such private-equity owned businesses, an initial public offering was little more than a "last-get-out-of-jail card". As far as the weight of City opinion was concerned, only debt-free Supergroup (which has grown to 41 stores in Britain and 27 overseas) was selling a genuine growth story.
