The former Bosnian Serb general, 69, was whisked to The Hague on Tuesday evening, just five days after his arrest last week as fugitive from UN prosecutors for the last 16 years.
He arrived in Rotterdam at around 18.45 UK time.
A Serbian government jet carrying Mladic landed in Rotterdam and pulled into a hangar, out of view of reporters and live television cameras. A Dutch police helicopter stood just outside the hangar's entrance, and police vehicles also pulled up near by.
Mladic will be taken to the UN detention unit near The Hague to undergo a formal identification process. Within a few days he will be brought before a UN judge for a preliminary hearing.

Excerpt:
The Srebrenica massacre, also known as the Srebrenica genocide,[1][2][3][4][5][6] refers to the July 1995 killing of more than 8,000 Muslim [7] Bosniak men and boys, in and around the town of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, by units of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) under the command of General Ratko Mladić during the Bosnian War, in the largest mass murder committed in Europe since World War II.[8] A paramilitary unit from Serbia known as the Scorpions, officially part of the Serbian Interior Ministry until 1991,[9] participated in the massacre[10][11] and it is alleged that foreign volunteers including the Greek Volunteer Guard also participated.[12][13][14]
In April 1993 the United Nations had declared the besieged enclave of Srebrenica in the Drina Valley of north-eastern Bosnia a "safe area" under UN protection. However in July 1995 the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR), represented on the ground by a 400-strong contingent of Dutch peacekeepers, failed to prevent the town's capture by the VRS and the subsequent organised massacre of men of military age and others and the expulsion of the enclave's surviving population.[15][16][17][18]
In 2004, in a unanimous ruling on the "Prosecutor v. Krstić" case, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), located in The Hague, ruled that the massacre of the enclave's male inhabitants constituted a crime of genocide.[19] The forcible transfer of between 25,000 to 30,000 Bosniak women, children and elderly which accompanied the massacre was found by the ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia) to be confirming evidence of the genocidal intent of members of the VRS Main Staff who orchestrated the massacre.[20] Theodor Meron, the presiding judge, stated:
http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/CcUF_3oRD6k/Bill+Clinton+Hosts+Event+Marking+Anniversary/oossO-ttkYJ/Bakir+IzetbegovicBy seeking to eliminate a part of the Bosnian Muslims, the Bosnian Serb forces committed genocide. They targeted for extinction the 40,000 Bosnian Muslims living in Srebrenica, a group which was emblematic of the Bosnian Muslims in general. They stripped all the male Muslim prisoners, military and civilian, elderly and young, of their personal belongings and identification, and deliberately and methodically killed them solely on the basis of their identity.[21]

Hosted by President Clinton, the afternoon panel discussed the making of the accords and the ramifications they had on current history. The Dayton accords brought to an end the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina which claimed an estimated 100,000 lives.

IZETBEGOVIC ASKED CLINTON TO STOP SREBRENICA GENOCIDE, LETTER DATED 9 JULY 1995.
Letter from wartime President of Bosnia-Herzegovina Alija Izetbegovic to the President of the United States Bill Clinton on 9 July 1995:Dear Mr President,
The crisis over Srebrenica, a region in Eastern Bosnia that has been surrounded since the beginning of the war, has been lasting for a while now.
In its Resolutions 824 and 836, the UN Security Council declared this region a UN safe area. In addition to this, in agreement with UNPROFOR, the region was demilitarised in 1993.
Despite this, the town and its environs have been constantly shelled. However, since yesterday, the Serbian aggressor has been carrying out a massive mechanized and infantry attack against this zone.
The UNPROFOR forces, which are few in number, are neither willing to protect nor capable of protecting the town, under attack, and so more than 60,000 inhabitants, most of whom are women, children, and the elderly, have found themselves in mortal danger.
The UNPROFOR forces, which are few in number, are neither willing to protect nor capable of protecting the town, under attack, and so more than 60,000 inhabitants, most of whom are women, children, and the elderly, have found themselves in mortal danger.
Please use your influence to ensure that the international community fulfil its obligations to this UN safe area and prevents an act of terrorism and genocide against the civilian population of Srebrenica.
In anticipation of your immediate action, please accept the assurances of my highest esteem.

In Washington on Saturday, Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic said he hopes the American airdrops will provide an impetus for the talks.
Izetbegovic spoke after meeting with Vice President Al Gore and White House National Security Adviser Anthony Lake for an hour and a half. Clinton was not at the meeting, officials said.

Excerpt:
A Vice Presidential invitation to Washington was felt by the Administration, diplomats here say, to be the only way of persuading Mr. Izetbegovic to join the New York talks after Washington decided to throw its weight behind the peace efforts of Mr. Vance and Lord Owen instead of intervening directly on the Muslim side.
Without the Bosnian leader, the peace effort risked failure since Mr. Karadjic has said he will not remain at the United Nations unless Mr. Izetbegovic is a party to the negotiations.
In an interview with The Financial Times of London today, the Russian Foreign Minister, Andrei V. Kozyrev, made clear that Moscow does not believe that the Bosnian Government can hope for substantially better terms than those being offered by Mr. Vance and Lord Owen. Their plan calls for dividing Bosnia and Herzegovina into largely autonomous provinces. The Bosnian Government says such a step would reward Serbian militias for their "ethnic cleansing" campaigns.

African telecoms firms can claim carbon credits | Send to a friend |

London. Although a large number of African telecom firms use diesel generators to power their base stations and other telecoms equipment, the “green revolution” that should see them make more use of renewable energy solutions is yet to come. Mindsets like “this is how we are doing things here” are slow to change but sooner rather than later, telecom operators will need to incorporate “the green component” in how they operate their networks in Africa. This is exactly where Nedbank Capital’s new carbon credits scheme for telecoms operators comes in. According to Fritz Milosevic, investment banker at Nedbank Capital, the new scheme can help telecom operators to generate additional revenue via carbon credits. |
