According to McLean (as posted on his website), this song was originally inspired by the death of Buddy Holly. "The Day The Music Died" is February 3, 1959, when Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash after a concert. McLean wrote the song from his memories of the event. The Beatles Sgt. Pepper album was a huge influence, and McLean has said in numerous interviews that the song represented the turn from innocence of the '50s to the darker, more volatile times of the '60s - both in music and politics.

A suspicious device found in a wing of UC Merced's Kolligian Library was removed by the Merced Police Department's bomb squad on Tuesday.
The package, which was in a plastic bag, was not detonated, according to Cmdr. Dave Alcaraz with the bomb squad. "We actually X-rayed it first and determined there was no explosives in it. We carried it out," Alcaraz said.
The incident is under investigation, according to Rita Spaur, chief of police for the UC Merced Police Department.

Jane Pauley suing N.Y. Times for fraud
Published: Oct. 25, 2006 at 5:45 PM
NEW YORK, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Journalist Jane Pauley filed a lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court against the New York Times alleging the paper duped her into an advertising scheme.
The 55-year-old former "NBC Nightly News" anchor, who suffers from bipolar disorder, has claimed in the lawsuit that the newspaper tricked her into an interview she believed was for an article on mental health issues. Thesmokinggun.com Web site reported Pauley's comments were used as part of an advertising campaign for a drug supplement.
Pauley has worked with several mental health groups since she revealed her own disorder in 2004, and she claimed the paper completely misled her in terms of the October 2005 "special advertising supplement."
The published article ultimately promoted psychotherapeutic drugs sold by pharmaceutical companies such as Eli Lilly, which was not something Pauley said she agreed to do.
Pauley is seeking unspecified damages from DeWitt Publishing, which assisted in the article, and from the newspaper, the report said.

1) Anthony "Tony" Coelho (born June 15, 1942) is a former United States congressman from California, and primary sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act. He is a former chairman, and current member of the Epilepsy Foundation's national board of directors.
2) In 1989, Coelho resigned from the House after six terms in the wake of press reports that he had received a loan from a savings and loan executive to purchase junk bonds. He was not charged with any crime.[7]
While in the House, he was a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.[8]
Coelho was credited by Congressional colleagues as the primary sponsor[9] of the Americans with Disabilities Act, signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. By 1994, four years after the law's passage, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that some 800,000 more people with severe disabilities had found employment than were employed when the ADA was first enacted.[10] The promise of Coelho’s political career had been redeemed by the community of persons with disabilities from whose ranks he had risen.
[edit] Life after Congress
In nearly two decades since his retirement from Congress, Coelho has pursued careers in business and public service, while remaining active in the disabilities community. After leaving Congress, he joined Wertheim Schroder & Company, an investment firm, as a managing director.
In 1992, he was implicated in the House banking scandal.

COELHO TO RESIGN HIS SEAT IN HOUSE IN FACE OF INQUIRY
Representative Tony Coelho of California, the No. 3 Democrat in the House and the leading contender to become majority leader, said today that he was resigning from Congress rather than put his party and his colleagues through a protracted investigation of his personal finances.
''I want to give my party a chance to move on,'' he said in an interview.
Mr. Coelho, the majority whip, had been expected to face a House investigation for a 1986 investment involving the purchase of $100,000 in junk bonds underwritten by the investment firm Drexel Burnham Lambert. He has acknowledged failing to report on his 1987 financial disclosure form the help that he received from a savings and loan executive in buying the bonds. In addition, Justice Department officials confirmed this week that they had opened a preliminary criminal inquiry into the purchase. Called Act a Mistake
Mr. Coelho has called his failure to report the executive's help a mistake made by his accountant, although one for which he takes full responsibility. He has also denied any suggestion that he lent any regulatory or legislative assistance to the savings and loan industry in exchange for that help.

The House Banking Scandal
1992
As scandals go, it wasn't that big of a deal. But it infuriated people back home and caused a firestorm in Washington. Members of Congress, once again, were playing by different rules than regular people. If they needed extra money, all they had to do was go to the House "bank" and over draw their accounts. At least 355 members (out of 435) had overdrawn their accounts; and about 110 had 'fessed up to it.The first Honorable Member indicted because of investigations stemming from the Banking Scandal was Mary Rose Oakar; then came Carl (Chris) Perkins, and Carroll Hubbard. Here's a list of the 22 worst, as identified by the House Ethics Committee:Tommy Robinson (Republican-Arkansas) 996 checks/16 months overdueRobert Mrazek (Democrat-New York) 920/23Robert Davis (Republican-Michigan) 878/13 ($350,000)Doug Walgren (Democrat-Pennsylvania) 858/16Charles Hatcher (Democrat-Georgia) 819/35 ($273,000)Stephen Solarz (Democrat-New York) 743/30Charles Hayes (Democrat-Illinois) 716/15Ronald Coleman (Democrat-Texas) 673/23 ($275,848)Carl C. House Banking Scandal
The PBS onlineNewshour summarizes the House Banking Scandal, also known as Rubbergate: "In 1992, many House members were suspected of bouncing checks from accounts they held at the so-called "House Bank" -- a loose operation that allowed member of Congress to cash their checks but kept shoddy records and often were quite delayed in recording deposits or withdrawals. Although the lawmakers had broken no laws and many did not even know they were bouncing checks, several took advantage of the bank system and many voters viewed the scandal as a blatant abuse of power. Of the 296 sitting representatives and 59 former members who had overdrafted their personal accounts in the preceding 39 months, the House Ethics Committee released a list of the 24 worst abusers."[1]http://www.benderconsult.com/articles/tony-coelho-reflects-his-life-epilepsy

Bates Heads 'Rubbergate' List for State
WASHINGTON — Overdrafts totaling $170,685 by former Democratic San Diego Rep. Jim Bates are the highest so far of any former or current California representative involved in the House check-overdraft scandal.
Bates' total, along with those of Duncan Hunter (R-Coronado) and Bill Lowery (R-San Diego), gives San Diego County the dubious distinction of having the top three California-based writers of bad checks in the House of Representatives.

Bates, who is running for the county's new congressional seat, said Tuesday he would release a list all his checks that were held for insufficient funds by the House bank, whose laissez-faire operations have drawn him and hundreds of members into the embarrassing "Rubbergate" scandal.
Late Monday, Bates obtained the record of his account from the House Ethics Committee that shows he wrote 89 bad checks totaling $170,685 over a 39-month period ending Oct. 3.

THE 2004 CAMPAIGN: THE MASSACHUSETTS SENATOR; Kerry Uses Edwards's Common Touch to Soften Image
Correction Appended
Senator John Kerry, who is not the son of a mill worker, is borrowing heavily from the message and manner of Senator John Edwards, who is.
Mr. Kerry is talking nonstop about job losses, about the ''haves and have-nots,'' about hardship and heartache in the industrial heartland. He is even surrounding himself with mill workers to prove his point -- and retelling their stories about as often as Mr. Edwards mentions that he grew up in a textile town and saw the broken spirits of those whom global trade left behind.
Mr. Kerry's transformation into an empathetic candidate with a decidedly blue collar on his navy pinstriped suit began months ago as he struggled to connect with audiences put off by his patrician manner and emotional distance.
It has taken on new significance, however, since the Democratic race narrowed to Mr. Kerry and Mr. Edwards, whose affability, speaking style and up-from-the-bootstraps biography stand in contrast to Mr. Kerry's Boston Brahmin image and background. And it will be even more vital, Democratic strategists say, should Mr. Kerry win the nomination and take on a president whose popularity is based largely on his regular-guy, emotionally direct appeal.

Tony Coelho, who served as Al Gore's campaign chairman in the early part of his 2000 campaign, said Mr. Kerry seemed to have left his cerebral policy wonkishness in Iowa, where at the low point of his campaign he had nothing to lose by loosening up. ''He had a lot of Gore in him,'' Mr. Coelho said.
If Mr. Kerry's transformation lasts, Mr. Coelho said, ''this is going to help him out tremendously against Bush, because that's what Bush has.''
''If Kerry, who everybody agrees has intellectual curiosity, has inner peace, he'll go against Bush, who has that, but no intellectual curiosity,'' he said.
Mr. Coelho described that inner peace as ''being able to reach out to people, hug them, and touch them -- as opposed to being the brightest kid in class.''
