Last night, there was a two foot surge in river level at the Brownville Nuclear power plant just south of Omaha Nebraska. The plant came within inches of having to be shut down http://www.kctv5.com/news/28294414/detail.html It has now declared an “Unusual event at nuclear power plant”. At this time, both the Fort Calhoun and Brownville plants have declared “unusual event at nuclear plant”. The Brownville plant is currently producing 30% of the power for the area because the Calhoun plant had been shut down for refueling, and the Fort Calhoun plant is completely surrounded by water. The two nuclear plants augment production from the coal plants that produce a majority of power for the region. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2078685,00.

OMAHA, Neb. -- The bloated Missouri River rose to within 18 inches of forcing the shutdown of a nuclear power plant in southeast Nebraska but stopped and ebbed slightly Monday, after several levees in northern Missouri failed to hold back the surging waterway.
The river has to hit 902 feet above sea level at Brownville before officials will shut down the Cooper Nuclear Plant, which sits at 903 feet, Nebraska Public Power District spokesman Mark Becker said.
Flooding is a concern all along the river because of the massive amounts of water that the Army Corps of Engineers has released from six dams. Any significant rain could worsen the flooding especially if it falls in Nebraska, Iowa or Missouri, which are downstream of the dams.
The river is expected to rise as much as 5 to 7 feet above flood stage in much of Nebraska and Iowa and as much as 10 feet over flood stage in parts of Missouri. The corps predicts the river will remain that high until at least August.
Becker said the river rose to 900.56 feet at Brownville on Sunday, then dropped to 900.4 feet later in the day and remained at that level Monday morning. The National Weather Service said the Missouri River set a new record Sunday at Brownville when its depth was measured at 44.4 feet. That topped the record of 44.3 feet set during the 1993 flooding.
The Cooper Nuclear Plant is operating at full capacity Monday, Becker said.
The Columbus-based utility sent a "notification of unusual event" to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission when the river rose to 899 feet early Sunday morning. The declaration is the least serious of four emergency notifications established by the federal commission.
"We knew the river was going to rise for some time," Becker said Sunday. "It was just a matter of when."
The nuclear plant has been preparing for the flooding since May 30. More than 5,000 tons of sand has been brought in to construct barricades around it and access roads, according to NPPD.

| Two Missouri River levees broke Monday along the swollen Missouri River near the Iowa-Missouri border, a local official and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said. The first breach, which was some 300 feet wide and growing, was a "full breach," the Army Corps of Engineers said in a statement. The break was in Atchison County, Missouri, just south of Hamburg, Iowa, it said. The National Weather Service warned that flooding could affect Interstate 29 and the town of Hamburg. "The concern is that anybody ... near the river would see some floodwaters that could impact either their road or homes," said David Pearson with the National Weather Service in Omaha, Nebraska.

| A nuclear power plant 19 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska, declared an alert due to electrical problems, officials said. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Tuesday morning's incident was "declared due to an indication of fire. " But Omaha Public Power District, which operates Fort Calhoun Station, said the alert was due to smoke and there was no indication of fire. The fire was extinguished within 50 minutes, the NRC said, adding an "alert" is the second-lowest of four emergency classes

Ft. Calhoun Flood Defenses
The Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Facility is an island right now but it is one that authorities say is going to stay dry. They say they have a number of redundant features to protect the facility from flood waters that include the aqua dam, earthen berms and sandbags.

On June 6, 2011 the Omaha Public Power District, as required by Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines, declared a Notification of Unusual Event.[8][9] (minimal level on a 4 level taxonomy) due to the flooding of the Missouri River.[10] The Missouri River is above flood stage and is expected to rise further and remain above flood stage for several weeks to a month. Contractors have been busy installing sandbags and earthen berms to protect the facility from flooding.[10] According to officials, the plant was built to withstand a 500 year flooding event and though by June 14, 2011, much of the facility was surrounded by the swollen Missouri River, Omaha Public Power District officals were confident that enough redundancies were in place to ensure adequate safety.[11] It was reported on June 17, 2011 that the plant was in "safe cold shutdown" mode and that four weeks worth of additional fuel had been brought in to power backup generators, should they be needed. The Army Corps of Engineers indicated that with average precipitation, the Missouri River would not go above 1,008 feet (307 m) above sea level and OPPD officials stated that the current flood protection efforts would protect the plant to 1,010–1,012 feet (310–308 m) feet above sea level. Officials indicated the spent fuel pool is at 1,038.5 feet (316.5 m) above sea level.[12] The Federal Aviation Administration has declared a "temporary flight restriction," in a two nautical mile radius, centered on the Fort Calhoun nuclear facility. This restriction went into effect on June 6, 2011, at 4:31 PM, and remains in effect "until further notice."[13]
On June 7, 2011, an electrical component in a switcher room caused a small fire with poisonous gases and Halon extinguisher activation which forced a partial evacuation.[14] The fire was no longer active when firefighters arrived and according to officials, the public was never in any danger, however in response, the Omaha Public Power District declared an Alert[15][16] (second level on a 4 level taxonomy). The fire impacted a pump which is used to recirculate coolant water through the spent fuel pool. The pump was offline for an hour but backup equipment was not needed as the estimated time for the pool to reach boiling temperature was over 88 hours.[17] The evacuation was the first at the facility since 1992, when 20,000 US gallons (76,000 l; 17,000 imp gal) (ca. 76 t) of coolant leaked into a containment building from the reactor.[18][19]

US Orders News Blackout Over Crippled Nebraska Nuclear Plant

(MOSCOW ) - Editor's note: I am about to approve a comment on this story that claims it is a hoax, in fact it is not a hoax, it possibly may not be entirely accurate, but this piece has been carried by many agencies already. There are so-called 'Citizen Journalism' sites that sometimes strike it with groundbreaking news, so the fact that they allow people to post their own stories means they need disclaimers, unlike Salem-News.com which is staffed by working news editors and other personnel
Now the fact that it is on Wikipedia does not make it true, but I think if that information were blatantly false, the nuclear plant's publicists would have instantly stripped from the pages of the world's online public encyclopedia.
No matter what, they built this nuclear power plant in the flood plain of the Missouri River, for God's sake! It reminds us that there are questions over whether nuclear power developers have souls and they don't even bother making these places on safe high ground.
The nuclear power plant near where I went to high school and college; Diablo Canyon at Avila Beach, California, is built on a Native American burial ground at a canyon named after the devil. Nuclear power, it is not clean, and it is all one big looming disaster. That is why people in affected areas, like San Luis Obispo, California, (Diablo Canyon) have always held the torch of resistance high over dangerous, deadly nuclear power that is anything but clean. So shortly after the disaster in Japan, we now have our own; but just ask the suits and they will tell everyone things are going to be fine, we shall see.
In reference to the pending story comment, here is what Wikipedia has to say about the matter:
On June 6, 2011 the Omaha Public Power District, as required by Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines, declared a level 1 anomaly (minimal level incident on a 1-4 scale) due to the flooding of the Missouri River. The Missouri River is above flood stage and is expected to rise further and remain above flood stage for several weeks to a month. Contractors have been busy installing sandbags and earthen berms to protect the facility from flooding. According to officials, the plant was built to withstand a 500 year flooding event and though by June 14, 2011, much of the facility was surrounded by the swollen Missouri River, Omaha Public Power District officials were confident that enough redundancies were in place to ensure adequate safety.
It was reported on June 17, 2011 that the plant was in "safe cold shutdown" mode and that four weeks worth of additional fuel had been brought in to power backup generators, should they be needed. Officials lie. Political types always admit this, though they go silent when their particular industry is under the microscope. The federal government lied about the Camp Lejeune water contamination in North Carolina for decades; they would like again. Remember that there are other world agencies watching this. As far as the story being a 'hoax'- that is not true. What the actual danger level (1-4) is, what the public officials admit; these are the things we are looking at and will continue to do so. Let's not give the government too much credit for being forthcoming. Of course the mainstream is looking at the matter also, though their headline in this story seems more like a government advertisement than a headline: NRC: No flood danger at reactorBy Nancy Gaarder - WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Here is the original report:
A shocking report prepared by Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency (FAAE) on information provided to them by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) states that the Obama regime has ordered a “total and complete” news blackout relating to any information regarding the near catastrophic meltdown of the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant located in Nebraska.
According to this report, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant suffered a “catastrophic loss of cooling” to one of its idle spent fuel rod pools on 7 June after this plant was deluged with water caused by the historic flooding of the Missouri River which resulted in a fire causing the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) to issue a “no-fly ban” over the area.
Located about 20 minutes outside downtown Omaha, the largest city in Nebraska, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant is owned by Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) who on their website denies their plant is at a “Level 4” emergency by stating: “This terminology is not accurate, and is not how emergencies at nuclear power plants are classified.”
Russian atomic scientists in this FAAE report, however, say that this OPPD statement is an “outright falsehood” as all nuclear plants in the world operate under the guidelines of the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES) which clearly states the “events” occurring at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant do, indeed, put it in the “Level 4” emergency category of an “accident with local consequences” thus making this one of the worst nuclear accidents in US history.
Though this report confirms independent readings in the United States of “negligible release of nuclear gasses” related to this accident it warns that by the Obama regimes censoring of this event for “political purposes” it risks a “serious blowback” from the American public should they gain knowledge of this being hidden from them.
Interesting to note about this event was the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chief, Gregory B. Jaczko, blasting the Obama regime just days before the near meltdown of the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant by declaring that “the policy of not enforcing most fire code violations at dozens of nuclear plants is “unacceptable” and has tied the hands of NRC inspectors.”
This report further notes that the “cover-up” of this nuclear disaster by President Obama is being based on his “fantasy” of creating so-called green jobs which he (strangely) includes nuclear power into as his efforts to bankrupt the US coal industry proceed at a record breaking pace.
Unknown to the American people about Obama’s “war” on the US coal industry is it’s estimated to cost them over a 60% increase in their electricity bills by 2014 and cause over 250,000 jobs to be lost in an already beleaguered economy.
More ominous for those American people whose lives depend on the coal industry that is being deliberately destroyed is the Obama regime’s massive “security exercise” currently ongoing in the major coal mining States of Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, and as we can read about, in part, as reported by InfoWars.Com:
Obama’s fears of the American people turning against nuclear power, should its true dangers be known, appear to be valid as both Germany and Italy (whose people, unlike the Americans, have been told the truth) have turned against it after the disaster in Japan and vowed to close all of their atomic plants.
Perhaps even more sadly for the American people is this report stating that the Obama regime is “walking in lockstep” with Japan in their attempts to keep the truth of nuclear accidents from their citizens; which in the case of the Japanese can only be labeled as horrific as new evidence points to them knowing within hours of the Great Tsunami that their atomic reactors had melted down, but have only today ordered an evacuation of pregnant women from what are called “radiation hotspots.”
With a country that some scientists are now warning may soon become uninhabitable due to radiation damage, and with reports of mutant rabbits and radioactive whales now being reported, one wonders if in knowing the truth the American people would really want to follow Japan’s “example” instead of those people in Germany and Italy?
But, with an already documented 35% increase in the infant mortality rate for American mothers living in the western coastal regions of the US caused by radiation blowing onto them from Japan being ignored by these people there doesn’t seem to be much hope for them.
