RESEARCH ON THE ENGLISH SPELLING AND LITERACY

The following is a selection of recent research on the connections between traditional English Spelling and literacy problems.

1991: British Journal of Psychology, #82, pp 527-537:  The effect of orthography on the acquisition of literacy skills; Gwenllian Thorstad, The Tavistock Clinic, Child and Family Department, London.

This study compared Italian and British children, showing, for example, that 7-year-old Italians were able to read words they did not know, and some 11-year-old British children could not read words they DID know [in speech]. The report concludes: 'As a result of this learner-friendly orthography, Italian children do not need to spend so long learning the mechanisms of literacy skills as English children do, and have more time for other studies.'

Why we like him: Lockwood, 53, retained crucial elements of the edgy, irreverent Freebirds style (backwards-F logo and Lady Liberty on a motorcycle, burrito in hand) and cult following, but added veto-resistant salads and a softer décor package. They also ratcheted up local marketing. “It’s all about the single-store economic model.”
What’s next: The company is on target to double in size in 2010, to 52 units in four states. “The people are our differentiator, both staff and fans. We’re passionate about our team members and our fans are passionate about us.”

Tavistock Restaurants buys Sapporo

EMERYVILLE Calif. Multi-concept operator Tavistock Restaurants LLC has acquired the single unit Sapporo Restaurant in Scottsdale, Ariz., in a $1.7 million deal that closed Dec. 22, the company said last week.

Known for sushi, teppanyaki and inventive cocktails, the 10-year-old Sapporo was owned by Scottsdale-based Sapporo Restaurant Group, which filed for bankruptcy reorganization in June. The $1.7 million price tag was revealed in court documents.

Bill Bartlett, Tavistock’s chief operating officer, said the fun and interactive teppanyaki and sushi concept fit in well with the company’s portfolio, which also includes the casual-dining Napa Valley Grille, Zed 451, Alcatraz Brewing Co., Blackhawke Café, California Café and Café del Rey brands. The restaurants are located in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Scottsdale.

In 2007, Tavistock also acquired the fast-casual Freebirds World Burrito chain, which now has more than 20 units, primarily in Texas.

Business model
Freebirds is a privately owned company, with all locations owned by parent company Tavistock Group.[5] The Tex-mex restaurant's primary offering is burritos, which customers order cafeteria-style allowing them to customize their meal by choosing burrito size and type of tortilla, then choosing its filling from a selection of meats, cheeses, beans, vegetables and sauces. Locations also generally offer customizable salads, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, and "burrito bowls" which are burritos without a tortilla. Side item offerings include chips, salsa, queso, and soups.[6][7][10]
Committed to operating in an environmentally conscious manner, the company stocks recycled paper products in its locations, and prints its menus on 100% recycled papers. They also encourage their customers to "recycle" their burritos foil wrappers by turning them into art work, which is then displayed in various Freebirds locations.[12]

Dyslexia, also known as "word blindness," is broadly defined as the failure to read at expected levels. Dyslexic children exhibit normal intelligence and often perform well in other academic areas such as mathematics. Yet these children have difficulty translating strings of letters into verbal utterances. Thus, a dyslexic child will repeatedly stumble over common words in a frustrating attempt to read a simple passage.
To find out more about how children learn to read, Shaywitz and her colleagues designed a project called the Connecticut Longitudinal Study. The researchers randomly selected 24 kindergarten classes during the 1983-1984 school year and then kept track of these youngsters from first through sixth grade. Kids took intelligence tests in grades 1, 3 and 5 and reading achievement tests yearly. The diagnosis of dyslexia was reserved for children whose reading ability fell far below the level predicted from their intelligence test scores.

Dysgraphia is a deficiency in the ability to write,[1] primarily in terms of handwriting, [2] but perhaps also in terms of coherence.[3] It occurs regardless of the ability to read and is not due to intellectual impairment.[citation needed] Acquired dysgraphia is known as agraphia.[4]
People with dysgraphia usually can write on some level, and often lack other fine motor skills and may be cross dominant, finding tasks such as tying shoes difficult. It often does not affect all fine motor skills. They can also lack basic grammar and spelling skills (for example, having difficulties with the letters p, q, b, and d), and often will write the wrong word when trying to formulate thoughts (on paper). In childhood, the disorder generally emerges when the child is first introduced to writing. The child may make inappropriately sized and spaced letters, or write wrong or misspelled words despite thorough instruction. Children with the disorder may have other learning disabilities, but they usually have no social or other academic problems. Cases of dysgraphia in adults generally occur after some neurological trauma. Dysgraphia may also be diagnosed in a person with Tourette syndrome, ADHD or an autism spectrum disorder such as Asperger syndrome. The DSM IV identifies dysgraphia as a "Disorder of Written Expression" as "writing skills (that) ...are substantially below those expected given the person's ...age, measured intelligence, and age-appropriate education."
