Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, whose original spelling was Samuin (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)".[1] The name of the festival historically kept by the Gaels in the British isles is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer's end".[1]
2) UNICEF
Main article: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF
"Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" has become a common sight during Halloween in North America. Started as a local event in a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood in 1950 and expanded nationally in 1952, the program involves the distribution of small boxes by schools (or in modern times, corporate sponsors like Hallmark, at their licensed stores) to trick-or-treaters, in which they can solicit small-change donations from the houses they visit. It is estimated that children have collected more than $118 million for UNICEF since its inception. In Canada, in 2006, UNICEF decided to discontinue their Halloween collection boxes, citing safety and administrative concerns; after consultation with schools, they instead redesigned the program.[25][26]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parentalia
Excerpt:
In ancient Rome, the Parentalia or dies parentales ("ancestral days") was a nine-day festival held in honor of family ancestors, beginning February 13.[1]
Although the Parentalia was a holiday on the Roman religious calendar, its observances were mainly domestic and familial.[2] The importance of the family to the Roman state, however, was expressed by public ceremonies on the opening day, the Ides of February, when a Vestal conducted a rite for the collective di parentes of Rome at the tomb of Tarpeia.[3]
Ovid describes sacred offerings (sacrificia) of flower-garlands, wheat, salt, wine-soaked bread and violets to the "shades of the dead" (manes or in Festus, di manes - "the good ones") at the family tombs of the extramural necropolis, to strengthen the mutual obligations and protective ties between the living and the dead. This was a lawful duty of the paterfamilias (head of the family).[4][5] Parentalia terminated on February 21 in the midnight rites of Feralia, when the paterfamilias addressed the malevolent, destructive aspects of his manes. Feralia was a placation and exorcism: Ovid thought it a more rustic, primitive and ancient affair than the Parentalia itself. It appears to have functioned as a cleansing ritual for Caristia on the following day, when the family held an informal banquet to celebrate the amity between themselves and their benevolent ancestral dead (lares).[6][7] The emphasis on collective cult for the manes and early di parentes implies their afterlife as vague and lacking individuation. In later cult they are vested with personal qualities, and in the Imperial cult, they acquire divine numen and become the divi.[8]
From Parentalia to Caristia all temples were closed, marriages were forbidden, and "magistrates appeared without their insignia" (implying that no official business was done). William Warde Fowler describes the Parentalia as " practically a yearly renewal of the rite of burial".[9]

Michael Savage found out who is traveling to Brazil with President Obama, but the information didn't come from any sources in the U.S.
"We had to go to Brazil to find it, translated from the Portuguese," Savage said on his nationally syndicated radio show yesterday.
CEOs Jeffrey Immelt of General Electric, Aris Candris of Westinghouse, James T. Hackett of Anadarko Petroleum, John V. Faraci of International Paper and Anthony S. Harrington of Albright Stonebridge Group went to Brazil with the president, Savage reported on his website.
"If this list were not so incendiary, why would it not be published as a matter of fact in the newspapers in America?" Savage asked his radio audience. "Why are they hiding who is going there?"
Of all the names, Savage found Harrington's the most interesting.
"Remember Sandy Berger, the man who hid state secrets in his underwear and socks?" Savage asked. "Well, he works for Anthony S. Harrington at Albright Stonebridge Group, as well as does the … craziest woman in the history of the U.S. government, Madeline K. Albright."

Excerpt:
Kerry is part of the Boston Brahmin Forbes family, historically intermarried with prominent New England families like the Winthrops, Lowells, Cabots, and Emersons. The Kerry-Forbes family wealth comes from land ownership and John Kerry's marriage to Teresa Heinz, who controls the Heinz foods fortune. Largely as a result of this marriage, Kerry's personal wealth is estimated to range from $165 to $839 million.
