Edgar Bronfman Jr.'s Warner Music Group is quietly reassigning its chief comptroller, NEWSWEEK has learned, drawing renewed attention to problems with its systems for paying artists their royalties. Last week, Cher sued the company's music publishing arm, Warner/Chappell, alleging that it failed to pay her $250,000 in royalties over the last four years, though it is unclear whether the dispute is related to the systemic problems.

1) Presidents of World Jewish Congress
- Stephen S. Wise : (1936 - 19 Apr 1949)
- Nahum Goldmann : (1949–1977), (acting to 1955)
- Philip M. Klutznick : (1977–1979)
- Edgar M. Bronfman : (1979 - June 2007) , (acting to 1981)
- Ronald S. Lauder : (June 10, 2007 – present)[2]
2) Controversy and internal conflicts
The presidency of the World Jewish Congress is one of the most important and prestigious positions in the world of Jewish organizations. The "presidency of the Congress provided Bronfman with prestige and in return it received strong financial backing and generous funding from him. Nevertheless, documents that have reached Haaretz indicate that in practice, for the great honor that came his way, Bronfman paid far smaller sums than what many had thought until now."[8]
Bronfman's status within the organization allowed him to promote Rabbi Israel Singer's position in other organizations, such as president of the Jewish Claims Conference and chairman of the board of the World Jewish Restitution Organization.

In 2000, USA Networks bought Canada's North American Television, Inc. (a joint partnership between the CBC and Power Corporation of Canada), owner of cable TV channels Trio and Newsworld International (the CBC continued to program NWI until 2005, when eventual USA owner Vivendi sold the channel to a group led by Al Gore, who relaunched it as Current TV).

Excerpt:
Stephen Birmingham, in his book about the rise of the Eastern European Jews in America, called "The Rest of Us," states that Rosenstiel had been a bootlegger during Prohibition and caught the eye of Canadian Sam Bronfman. "Lew Rosenstiel had spent the Prohibition years boldly transshipping contraband liquor from England, Europe, and Canada via Saint Pierre and then, by truck, right into Cincinnati, Rosenstiel's hometown and center of operations. In the process, he was building what would become his giant Schenley Distillers Corporations. Bronfman and Rosenstiel had met often, during the latter's trips to Canada and had become gin-rummy-playing friends." (pp. 245-46) They worked out a 50-50 partnership deal in 1933 which required the Seagram's Co. to buy half of Rosenstiel's stock. The proposed merger soon fell apart, and the two became fierce competitors if not outright enemies, at least in business. They still maintained social closeness, according to Birmingham. Rosenstiel's second wife, Leonore Cohn--raised by her uncle Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures in California--was previously married to a Las Vegas businessman named Belden Kattleman. She left Rosenstiel to marry Walter Annenberg, whom President Nixon would name to be Ambassador to the Court of St. James. (8)

"We are launching an exciting television network for young men and women
who want to know more about their world and who enjoy real-life stories
created with, by and for their own generation," said Gore who, as Chairman of
the Board, will devote the lion's share of his time to the venture. "We want
to empower this dynamic generation with a network dedicated to them that has
integrity and a commitment to excellence. This will not be a political
network," Gore emphasized, adding, "These stories will be in a voice that
young people recognize and from a point of view they identify as their own."

“If an investigation of Jewish organizational life takes place, I promise you that the last person standing will be Israel Singer,” he says, referring to the Brooklyn rabbi who is at the center of the controversy.
Since 1979, Singer and billionaire Edgar Bronfman have skillfully and productively run the powerful World Jewish Congress. But for the past eighteen months, the WJC has been embroiled in a vicious internal battle, fueled by money, politics, and vast egos. The fight has been so acrimonious and mean-spirited that it threatens the very existence of the 68-year-old institution.
Accusations of mismanagement, bizarre bank transactions, stolen e-mails and computer files, intimidation, and cover-ups, which stretch from New York to Geneva to Jerusalem, have reached a decibel level that has attracted the attention of the New York State attorney general’s office, which is in the midst of a preliminary investigation. Though the attacks focus mostly on Singer, Herbits, a longtime employee of Bronfman’s who was brought onboard six months ago to manage the crisis, seems to take it very personally. “There are no illegalities in Israel Singer’s behavior, and that is not true of some of the leaders of these other organizations,” he says, standing now.

Company History:
The history of USA Interactive, Inc., formerly USA Networks, Inc., involves some of the media's biggest names, including Barry Diller, John Malone, Lowell Paxson, Edgar Bronfman, Jr., and Jean-Marie Messier. Its properties have ranged from cable TV networks to movie studios to electronic commerce companies. USA Networks, Inc. was formed in 1998 when Barry Diller acquired the cable networks USA Network, Sci-Fi Channel, and other assets from Edgar Bronfman's Seagram Co. and combined them with the Home Shopping Network and other assets. Ever the dealmaker, Diller entered into an agreement at the end of 2001 with Jean-Marie Messier of French media giant Vivendi S.A. to sell off USA's cable networks and movie studios and transform what remained of USA Networks, Inc. into an electronic commerce company called USA Interactive, Inc.

PERMINDEX AND SEAGRAMS USED THE SAME INVESTORS THE BUSH FAMILY USED.
Roy Cohn was a very close friend of Lewis Rosenstiel, who was in turn a friend of Sam Bronfman. Bloomfield was also president of Heineken of Canada. What these companies seem to have in common is their shareholders, directors and financiers. They are the same persons who invested in Bush-Overbey, Zapata and Dresser Industries through the investment trusts they controlled. The 1992 edition of Dope, Inc. (a LaRouche publication) has this to say about the banks involved:
Both Seagram's (and its old Prohibition rum-running partner, Hudson's Bay) are interlocked through a maze of contacts with all five of the big Canadian chartered banks: the Bank of Montreal, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Bank of Nova Scotia, the Toronto Dominion Bank, and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Thus, the dirty money gleaned from the drug trade is conduited through these banks to points further south: The banks' offshore centers in the Caribbean, and from there the money makes its whirlpool round of worldwide laundering.
The chairman of this Houston-based international investment bank, BICB, whose investors included Seagrams and the Schlesinger mining interests in South Africa, was Johan F. (Fred) Paravicini. Vice-chairman was L.F. McCollum, Sr.-a long-time Humble Oil employee, who headed Conoco and founded Capital National Bank of Houston in 1965. The bank's president was Baker Lovett, cousin of James A. Baker III, and grandson of the first president of Rice University, Odell Lovett, a friend of Woodrow Wilson at Princeton.

Mr. Cohn counted among his friends such people as President Reagan (although a Democrat, Mr. Cohn tended to support Republican Presidents), Norman Mailer, Bianca Jagger, Barbara Walters, Rupert Murdoch, William F. Buckley Jr., William Safire, George Steinbrenner, Estee Lauder, Warren Avis and dozens of politicians, Democrats and Republicans alike, at every level, from Cabinet members to county judges.
As a lawyer he represented such diverse clients as Donald Trump and Sam Lefrak, the real-estate executives; Francis Cardinal Spellman and Terence Cardinal Cooke and, on occasion, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. He also represented Carmine Galante, who before his death was said by authorities to be Mafia "boss of all bosses," and Tony (Fat Tony) Salerno, also said to be a Mafia chieftain.

I wanted to show he was a very sexual person. He loved sex, and he really didn't hide it that much. There were boys around him all the time. Barbara Walters saw these boys, Steinbrenner—they all saw the boys around but because he was Roy, they just put it out of their minds.

Have you encountered any legal problems with this play?Photo: Rick Gerharter
No I haven't. I was kind of hesitant about using Barbara Walters' name, but then a book came out, her biography. It mentions Roy all through it. How he helped her get the child. You know, the adoption. He used to date her in college. She was a wonderful friend to him. When she found but he had AIDS, she stood by him. I checked it all with a theater lawyer in LA and with the Dramatist Guild lawyer. And the part about the nurse in the hospital is all fiction. The historical part is just his dreams.

Seagram Company Limited
Seagram Company Limited was a producer of distilled spirits and wines with head offices in Montréal. The company was incorporated in 1928 as Distillers Corporation-Seagrams Ltd, as a holding company to acquire the capital stocks of Distillers Corp Ltd and Joseph E. Seagram & Sons Ltd. It gained a certain notoriety in the PROHIBITION era and enjoyed a certain celebrity thanks to the colourful nature of its owner, Samuel Bronfman (see BRONFMAN FAMILY).
Early History
When the Bronfman family left Russia in 1889 they were well-off, but upon coming to Canada and discovering that the Canadian climate did not suit farming the tobacco upon which they'd become wealthy, they had no source of income. The family patriarch, Yechiel, worked as a labourer for the Canadian Northern Railway, forced to leave his family behind to live in a small shed he'd been able to buy. He soon found a better job in a sawmill and he and his sons started selling firewood, and frozen whitefish in winter. Their next occupation was trading horses, which led them to the hotel and bar business. When Prohibition was enacted in Canada, the laws varied by province, but in general closed legal drinking establishments and forbade the sale of alcohol as a beverage and its possession and consumption except in a private dwelling.

Inasmuch as an animal cannot be defined apart from its
environment, it is worth analyzing the political setting of
Charles Keating. During the high points of Keating's reign the
big man in Arizona was Kemper Marley. Marley was the first and
only billionaire in Arizona. His wealth was based originally on
a liquor monopoly conferred upon him by Sam Bronfman of the
SEAGRAMS family. In Arizona Marley was all powerful.
In 1948, fifty two employees of Kemper Marley's wholely
owned company, UNITED LIQUOR, went to prison on federal liquor
violations -- including Gene Hensley, the father-in-law of
Arizona Senator John McCain. Gene Hensley was Kemper Marley's
UNITED LIQUOR general manager. On the basis of so many
prosecutions some people might feel UNITED LIQUOR could qualify
as organized crime. The slick attorney who kept Marley out of
this trial and sent McCain's father-in-law to prison in his place
was William Rehndquist -- currently the Chief Justice of the U.S.
Supreme Court.
It was the judgement of the court that Gene Hensley would
be prohibited from ever working in the liquor industry. Of
course such judgments meant nothing to Marley. When Gene Hensley
got out of prison Marley arranged a BUDWIESER distributorship for
Hensley which is now in the hands of Senator John McCain and
reported to be worth $50 million!
