Excerpt:
Speed Queen is a laundry machine manufacturer headquartered in Ripon, Wisconsin, USA. Speed Queen is a subsidiary of Alliance Laundry Systems LLC, who bill themselves as the world's largest manufacturer of commercial laundry equipment.[1] They make a large variety of residential and commercial products, from 25 pound capacity tumblers to 250 pound washer-extractors, as well as dryers. Their commercial machines are a popular brand for laundromats, apartment buildings, and hotels.

[edit] History

The company was founded in 1908 by Joe Barlow and John Seelig as Barlow & Seelig Manufacturing. They got their start by taking existing machine designs and improving them. In 1922, Speed Queen was the first company to introduce washers with nickel-copper tubs. The brand name "Speed Queen" was created in 1928. During World War II, they switched production to support the war effort, manufacturing 20 mm shells, and parts for airplanes, tanks and guns. In 1998, Raytheon Commercial Laundry, owners of the Speed Queen brand, was sold to Alliance Laundry Systems[2].

Earnings' unreliability is one of the reasons Foolish investors often flip straight past the income statement to check the cash flow statement. In general, by taking a close look at the cash moving in and out of the business, you can better understand whether the last batch of earnings brought money into the company, or merely disguised a cash gusher with a pretty headline.

W Spann was formed by Boston lawyer Cameron Casey of Ropes & Gray and was registered in Delaware on March 15. On April 28, the company gave $1 million to Restore Our Future, a political action committee run by former Romney campaign advisers. On July 12, W Spann dissolved.
A spokeswoman for the commission confirmed receiving the complaint yesterday but said that, as a matter of policy, the agency could not confirm whether it will investigate. A spokeswoman for the Department of Justice declined to comment.Continued...

Excerpt:
W Spann LLC was a phantom company created at the behest of unknown persons by Boston lawyer Cameron Casey on March 15, 2011, apparently for the sole purpose of anonymously donating one million dollars to Restore Our Future, a Super PAC supporting U.S. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.[1][2] After donating the money on April 28, the company was dissolved on July 12.[3]
Its given address in Midtown Manhattan at 590 Madison Avenue, a 41-story tower, had no record of its tenancy.[3] The address is shared by Bain Capital, of which Romney was once Chief Executive Officer, among other companies.[3] Alex Stanton, a spokesman for Bain Capital, denied any affiliation between the two companies.[3]
Romney’s campaign did not comment on the donation.[4] Tim Larimer, a spokesperson for Ropes & Gray, the law firm which employs Casey and represents Bain Capital, said the firm couldn't discuss the matter.[3] After NBC discovered the phantom company in August 2011, Democracy 21 and Campaign Legal Center, two groups that promote greater transparency in election laws, asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate whether campaign disclosure laws were broken.[5][6] Charles Spies, the treasurer of Restore Our Future, said that the pro-Romney committee had "fully complied with all FEC regulations, including publicly disclosing donors on our July 31 report".[5]

More than that, does anybody out there really believe that this is "corrupting" Mitt Romney? Holy Moly, I hope not. Romney is pretty well known by now. Some like him, some don't (disclaimer: in 2008 I was Romney's counsel in Ohio, and a member of his Advisory Committee on the Constitution and the Courts, so you can put me in the "like" category), but is there really anybody out there now wondering, "I used to think Romney was his own man, but not anymore" because of this? Is there anybody who thinks Romney is "corrupt" because of this? Is anyone thinking, "I used to think I knew what policies Romney would pursue, but now, who knows?" Let's get serious, here.
